  1. I can't speak to actual allergic reactions but I know when I eat soy it sits in my stomach like lead and just makes me feel icky - almost on the verge of nauseous. So it wouldn't surprise me if it would cause intestinal symptoms in someone allergic to it.
  2. I'm not sure about the risks of taking very high doses over the long term, but my Vit D was at 49. My doctor said that was ok but could be higher - 55 to 60 is the end goal.
  3. Ode to Celiac (To the cadence of The Adam’s Family theme song) Constant aches cramps and swelling Constipation pain and bloating What’s with the rash and itching? All I want to do is yak. Losing weight and never feel full Losing hair by the handful Can’t think straight and my mind’s dull What the hell is Celiac? The doctors are so clue...
  4. I think I found a fix... I started another new Northern New Jersey Restaurants thread and included a link to this one as the first post to get it started. Probably should have just done that in the first place... sorry...
  5. Well... we talk a lot about poo... that's not so different...
  6. Not sure about that one... but parsnips have less carbs, no sugar, and more fiber. (at least when comparing Trader Joe's brand parsnip chips vs their sweet potato chips). Could be a different food sensitivity altogether.
  7. I'm no doctor... but if it were me I would go back to being gluten-free but still have the biopsy. Here's why. You haven't been gluten-free for that long, so chances are good that if you do have Celiac the biopsy will still show damage and inflammation. If you have NCGI then it wouldn't show up on the biopsy either way. Also, when they look around in...
  8. I think it depends on how long you were off gluten, how efficient your body was at getting rid of the antibodies, and how much gluten you've been eating leading up to the bloodtest. As well as how high your numbers were before you went gluten-free. When people have been off gluten for an extended period of time and then want to get tested they will...
  9. It still sounds like a sugar problem to me. From what I understand, your glucose levels can test okay until you have full-blown diabetes. Carbs turn to sugar in your body very quickly. Also, it depends on what you're eating with the sugary foods. For example, if you're eating cottage cheese with the fruit you may not see the same response because...
  10. I just started a "Northern New Jersey Restaurants" thread - maybe one of the admin folks could move this conversation over there? Please?
  11. I just discovered an amazing Italian place in Clifton, NJ - La Riviera Trattoria. The chef's daughter is Celiac, and she works in the restaurant with him (he's also the owner). They have a full gluten-free menu... as in a full 2-sided menu. They use separate pots/pans, dishes, etc. They are a bit pricey, in my opinion, but well worth it! I went with...
  12. I don't think they have pizza... sorry.
  13. Yes, I believe this is normal. You've changed your diet and are eliminating gluten - either of which could cause changes in your digestive system. Many report getting new or worsening symptoms when they first go gluten-free - but then it gets better. As far as the "gluten-free foods" - if you mean processed stuff, please read the labels carefully. ...
  14. A friend and I tried the place in Clifton last night... La Riviera Trattoria... it was awesome! A bit pricey, IMO, but worth it. The gluten-free menu is an actual, 2-sided, full menu!! All of their pasta is imported from Italy and they sell it there too. I'll post it in the restaurant section. My friend is not gluten-free and she said the gluten food...
  15. Isn't that a Billy Joel song?? You may be right... I may be crazy... but it just may be a lunatic you're lookin' for....
  16. It seems to happen a lot that people feel better, for a week - or a month - or however long, and then BAM. They feel like crap again for a short time, and then slowly get better for good. I was just wondering... and this is just me with one of my weird theories because this is just how my mind works... if it has to do with the body thinking the antibodies...
  17. I'm new at this and haven't dared do the restaurant thing up until yesterday (with the exception of breakfast a couple of times).... but I'll definitely keep you in mind. There is another Italian place in Clifton I've been wanting to try... the chef's daughter is Celiac and apparently they "get it" too. I'll keep you posted. (I'm actually not too far from...
  18. For those of you in Northern to Central New Jersey, there is a great Italian place in Lyndhurst, NJ - Michael's Riverside. The owner (the actual "Michael") has gone gluten-free himself and has added a gluten-free menu. There are also items on the "regular" menu that they can make gluten-free upon request. While I was talking to him he explained how they...
  19. Great idea. Thanks.
  20. The best part was that in the past I always left the restaurant with that OMG-I-ate-too-much feeling, went home and slept 2 hours and woke up the next morning looking and feeling pregnant. You know the feeling... you look down and say to yourself... Who the hell invited you??? (And where are my fat pants?) Not this time!
  21. So there's this awesome Italian place near where I work that is a common spot for retirement parties, transfer luncheons, etc. I take my team there every year for our Holiday lunch/party. This year I was scared. Like terrified. A new Celiac trying to eat in an Italian restaurant??? I scoped out their menu online and had decided to take a chance on...
  22. Whenever my body has gone into I-can't-eat-anything-leave-me-alone mode, I find that plain chicken broth really helps. Sometimes with just a bit of salt in it. I drink it like tea.
  23. Thanks for sharing! That is really sweet!
