  1. Sticking to whole foods is a great start. I think some find raw veggies too harsh at first, although I had no problem with them. Drink lots of water - it helps flush everything out. And I know it is really tough to get sleep with young kids in the house, but sleep is one of your best friends while you're healing. I agree with nvsmom that now would be...
  2. I've wondered if the dominant/recessive gene combination makes a difference. For example, if you got blood type A from both parents are you more likely to benefit from the type A diet than if you got type A from one parent and type O from the other parent? Because if you're "AO", you're still type "A" because A is dominant. But for dietary purposes are...
  3. Everything you described are possible Celiac and/or gluten sensitivity symptoms. It's good you're planning on seeing a doctor because as you know, they are all potential symptoms of other ailments too. That's what makes Celiac go undiagnosed and misdiagnosed for so long for a lot of people. Ask your doctor for a full blood panel to check for any vitamin...
  4. I agree with GFinDC that it is a peronal decision as to whether or not to do the gluten challenge at this point but personnally I think your doctor is a bit of an idiot. Getting a diagnosis before going gluten-free can be important because the biopsy can detect if there is something else going on too - besides the Celiac. I would also suggest talking to...
  5. That's certainly true, and it's a personal decision as to whether you get tested or not. For me, I wanted the official diagnosis for two reasons. 1 - so that I could get the biopsy and know there wasn't something else going on too... like cancer, and 2 - so that I have the official diagnosis in the event I end up in the hospital or something - I don't want...
  6. From what I've read, the cravings go away after you've been gluten-free for awhile. I never liked bread, so didn't have any cravings - so no first-hand experience. Maybe you should consider finding a different part-time job? Like at a clothing store or something where there's no food. A Celiac working at Pizza Hut sounds a bit like an alcoholic working...
  7. You're probably going to get a dozen different answers, but these are the ones I use: Open Original Shared Link They're by Nature's Plus, which is a very reputable brand and they work really well for me. From the label: Product Label Activated Digestive Aid Live Food Enzyme Supplement With FOS and Bioperine® Hypo-Allergenic Vegetarian Capsules ...
  8. I have to disagree with some of the advice (sorry guys). If you want to know for sure whether you have Celiac or not, you have to get tested. And you can't get tested if you're already gluten-free. And if you go gluten-free for an extended period of time it can be very difficult, and painful, to then do the gluten challenge just so you can get tested....
  9. Since you asked... I'll admit that at times I don't appreciate your tone - although, I try to keep in mind that tone doesn't always come through in an email/post/whatever as it was meant to be. That said - I'm glad you requested that the information be sourced. I couldn't put my finger on where I had read that bit of information (the original post you...
  10. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum is gluten-free "Rum – Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Barcardi, Malibu – Most rums are made from sugar cane. Captain Morgan indicated that the spiced rum contains no gluten ingredients." Open Original Shared Link Whiskey and other distilled alcohols are also gluten-free - as long as they don't have malt flavorings in them, wh...
  11. Hi Len - First, let me say that I think you're brave and very sweet to reach out to a bunch of strangers in this way - and I commend you for really wanting to help your wife. When I started going through pre-menapausal symptoms I would wake up some days very angry and wanting to kill. For no reason at all. Other days I'd be on cloud nine - again...
  12. I don't think any one theory is necessarily 100% correct for anyone... and certaintly no one theory is correct for everyone... that said... some find that eating for your blood-type makes them feel better. This is the "Eat Right 4 Your Type" book by Dr. D'Adamo: Open Original Shared Link Like I said, you have to take the parts of any theory that resonate...
  13. Caveating this with - I've never been vegetarian - but just wanted to add, taking a good digestive enzyme may help quite a bit. Many celiacs take a digestive enzyme anyhow... but especially with meat, it may help get things back to normal faster.
  14. Coconut - I'm new at this too and I understand how intimidating it can be at first. As far as the gluten-challenge and further tests, that's really up to you as far as how important an "official" diagnosis is. My mom decided to do it because she had not been gluten-free for very long and she was worried that if something happened and she ended up in...
  15. ?? VitaminShoppe does not have on the label that it is gluten-free, so I suggested Country Life as an alternative - they are tested to be gluten-free
  16. I'm glad I was wrong about MARS miniatures - or the information was outdated, or whatever... It's good to see companies taking cross-contamination and allergens seriously. (although the thought of having to "settle" for a full-sized Snickers instead of a baby one wasn't all that bad...) I'll have to look for "Mama's Baci Cafe" - shouldn't be too far...
  17. I have not had those symptoms, but I'm what's known as an asymptomatic Celiac - meaning I didn't have any symptoms before going fluten-free even though they found a ton of inflammation and the biopsy showed a moderate to severe level of damage. As for the negative bloodtest for antibodies - that test is notoriously unreliable. I've seen estimates that a...
  18. I take Country Life brand Calcium/Magnesium/Potasium - good levels and gluten free: Supplement Facts Serving Size 2 Servings Per Container 90 Amount Per Serving % Daily Value Calcium(AS CALCIUM HYDROXYAPATITE, CITRATE, ALPHA-KETOGLUTARATE, ASPARTATE, LYSINATE...
  19. I got the skinny from the MARS folks.... drum-roll please.... They emailed me back with a case number and requested that I call their customer service number, so unfortunately I cannot copy/paste their response. The customer service rep said that their products change from time-to-time so you have to read the label every time you buy any one of their...
  20. I don't seem to have any issues with rice or corn... but reading this made me a bit angry. I mean seriously??? Can't they leave anything alone and just let food be food? I don't eat much corn any more because I grew up getting it fresh out of the garden and most of the crap they have in the stores now tastes like plastic to me (as far as corn-on...
  21. There are a few diseases that can cause a metallic taste, but so can a Vit B-12 deficiency or a Zinc deficiency. Celiac can cause all sorts of vitamin deficiencies.
  22. For what it's worth... I have a family member who has Celiac. Pre-diagnosis he was on anti-depressants. After going gluten-free he no longer needs them and he's feeling fine. I'm not sure how long he was gluten-free before being able to give up the meds, but it can happen.
  23. All of your symptoms could be related to Celiac - but they could have other, more serious causes as well. Getting things checked out is a must. As far as suggesting specific tests from your doctor - do not feel like this is somehow stepping outside the boundaries of the doctor-patient relationship. It's your body, your health, and your life. You have...
