ARCHIVED Coffee - Good Or Bad?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Ys255's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks KarenG. I'm still a bit confused because my uncle has Celiac and he most definitely cannot tolerate oats. Even the ones that are certified gluten-free. (my confusion is in relation to the oats - not the coffee) -
ARCHIVED Coffee - Good Or Bad?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Ys255's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that the idea of coffee being mistaken by your body as being the same as wheat protein sounds like voodoo BS. However, isn't this the same thing as what happens with oats? I was lead to believe that the protein in oats is not actually the same as that in wheat, rye, and barley - but many celiacs cannot tolerate oats because the protein is similar... -
I know this can be easier said than done sometimes, but try not to get twisted over what MIGHT happen. If something bad happens, freak out about it WHEN it happens. Because whether or not you freak out about it BEFORE it happens, you're going to freak out when it happens anyways... and there's just no sense in freaking out about it twice. And if it never...

I've heard that one too. All I can think is really??? you have so little self control that you'd rather be forced into never eating gluten again than to eat healthy by choice?? I think what actually gets me most about this is that people assume that gluten-free equates to healthy. You can actually eat just as unhealthy on a gluten-free diet as you can... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Go Through This?
NoGlutenCooties replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have actually always been that way. I'm awake and fine one minute and then it's like someone turned out the lights and I have to go to bed. Been that way ever since I can remember. And I've always needed 8 hours of sleep. I can function on 7 - 7 1/2 but if I do that, I need to catch up on the weekends. For me, it has nothing to do with gluten or vitamins... -
ARCHIVED Coffee - Good Or Bad?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Ys255's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I find coffee to be very acidic and I cannot drink it on an empty stomach. Some people need that first cup of joe to get moving in the morning, but I've found that I need to have food in my stomach first. Otherwise it tends to make me a little nausious. For what it's worth... orange juice does the same thing to me. Too acidic and high in sugar - I can... -
People can be real morons... insensitive, cruel, jack***es. And anyone who would yap about someone else's health issues is an idiot. However, this is a good reminder that anything posted up here is open source and available to the public to read and do with as they wish.

ARCHIVED Did Anyone See Friday's Ellen Show?
NoGlutenCooties replied to WinterSong's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just my .02 - if a significant other cannot understand a relatively simple thing as not being able to eat gluten then you're lucky to find that out early in the relationship so you can move on. And by "relatively simple" I do not mean to imply that the disease is somehow not serious... I mean that it is not overly complicated. And it isn't contageous... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Adjusting The Changes In Socializing
NoGlutenCooties replied to Wheatie NOT's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hear you. I really do. My uncle is extremely sensitive to cross-contamination issues, so I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm taking it one step at a time. I know I don't get any gluten at all at home - I live alone and cook for myself. Very few, if any processed foods, etc. I only eat out a couple times a month. So while I'm being very... -
I agree with Vallene. Find a new doctor and don't ever go back to clueless I-phone guy. While it's true that you can't believe everything that's on the Internet, and you won't necessarily get everything that's "possible" based on your symptoms, any doctor worth their stethoscope will at least give you the basic information. And I would NEVER trust a doctor...

ARCHIVED Newbie Adjusting The Changes In Socializing
NoGlutenCooties replied to Wheatie NOT's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm new at the gluten free diet too - just passed the one month mark. I went out to a restaurant for the first time since my diagnosis this last Friday night - it was a Halloween party and they had a buffet. The wait staff could not have been nicer. I spoke to one of the waitresses on the side, told her I was gluten intolerant (people seem to be more familiar... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Tmj Problems?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Debbie B in MD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I too tend to clench/grind my teeth at night and the dentist tried to sell me a $400 customized mouth guard, that of course insurance does not pay for. I went to CVS and found one for about $25 that lasts 6 months. I just soak it for a few minutes every morning in Polident to keep it clean - and buy a new one every 6 months. Works great. -
ARCHIVED Constipation Got Worse After Going Gluten-Free!?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Alaine23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You mention taking a fiber supplement, but have you tried Metamucil? I've been taking a heaping tablespoon of Metamucil in a large glass of water every morning for the last 20+ years and I go like clockwork (not the case before trying the Metamucil). I've tried other fiber pills, etc. and nothing works for me like the Metamucil. Oh - and exercise can... -
ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn - Yea Or Nay?
NoGlutenCooties replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get Paul Newman's "Newman's Own" - natural popcorn. It comes in individual bags as well as 100 calorie size smaller bags. It doesn't have the usual laundry list of artificial chemical crap in it. This is from the label: Newman's Own Microwave Popcorn, Palm Oil, Salt, Soybean Oil, Natural Flavors, Vitamin E (For Freshness) Contains: Milk I just... -

I had the anger thing too. I'd wake up in the morning angry at the world and ready to kill. For absolutely no reason at all. Other days I'd wake up on cloud 9, for absolutely no reason at all. I also had one bad crying fit that even scared my cat - again, for absolutely no reason at all. I started taking Relacore (the variation that does not have... -

Just yesterday in the recovery room after having my endoscopy (which confirmed Celiac) the nurse offers me juice and a snack. I ask her if they have anything gluten free (I went gluten free a month ago after getting the positive blood test results), which they do - so she brings me gluten free cookies. Then she kinda starts talking to me for a bit about... -
ARCHIVED Deep Depression With Pmt Three Months After Glutening
NoGlutenCooties replied to CR5442's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Also wanted to mention that Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to depression - have you had your D levels checked? Keep in mind that you should ask your doctor for the actual number. Often they will just tell you that it's fine, when it is actually low - just not low enough for it to be flagged on the test. -
ARCHIVED Always Super-Sensitive After Going gluten-free?
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks! I did brave a diner yesterday after having my endoscopy (got my official confirmation/diagnosis) - I was starving from not being able to eat for so long. I stuck with eggs and potatoes, but my friend had a cheeseburger. He offered me his dill pickle. I took one look at it and said - "I don't mean to sound like I'm being fanatical... but it's got... -
ARCHIVED Why Do I Feel So Bad?
NoGlutenCooties replied to student314's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is slightly off-topic but I just wanted to throw it out there as it didn't really occur to me until yesterday after I had my endoscopy/biopsy and the doctor confirmed my Celiac (she even showed me the pictures). Anyhow, I think there is a benefit to having an "official" diagnosis that I hadn't considered before now. Now I know if I end up in the hospital... -
ARCHIVED Just Cant Help Myself....
NoGlutenCooties replied to Janey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As with anything in the medical field, they can always be proven wrong. But the current understanding is: "a negative gene test indicates that celiac disease cannot develop in that individual. " Source: Open Original Shared Link But you can absolutely have gluten sensitivity or a wheat allergy (not the same thing) and not have the gene or Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Tips For Weight Loss/management On gluten-free Diet?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It may be a bit-counterintuitive, but make sure you're eating enough - especially enough protein. If you do not get enough protein (and other food) in your diet, your body basically goes into starvation mode and clings to every extra bit of fat it can (that's the un-scientific explanation). Also, you mention exercise. Often people assume that getting a... -
ARCHIVED Deep Depression With Pmt Three Months After Glutening
NoGlutenCooties replied to CR5442's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi CarolineC - Sorry to hear you're feeling so down... depression is terrible and something I think not very many people fully understand. I know for me, taking a B-complex really helped with many premenstrual symptoms, including energy and depression. -
ARCHIVED Always Super-Sensitive After Going gluten-free?
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks KarenG - good to know I may not have to have such bad reactions. I've been afraid to go restaurants... I have no intention of "cheating" on the diet, but the horror stories of what some people go through upon accidental contaminations is just awful. I hear what you're saying about having symptoms without knowing it, but I really do not have any... -
ARCHIVED Always Super-Sensitive After Going gluten-free?
NoGlutenCooties posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi All - I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and have only been gluten free for 4 weeks. I did not have any symptoms before the diagnosis, other than early osteopenia, but Celiac is in my family so as soon as I heard there was a blood test for it I got tested. Sure enough, I have it too. Anyhow, I know my uncle gets severe pain and gets violently... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Food
NoGlutenCooties replied to amitaitos's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with KarenG that this site doesn't appear to be all that credible. That said, not all food that says "gluten free" is necessarily healthy. Over-processed food with preservatives, additives, chemicals, corn syrup, and other crap isn't all that healthy - whether it has gluten in it or not.
