  1. It occurred to me that an organization might sell a fund-raising button or pin that we could wear in the market to ferret out other Celiacs and generally raise awareness. Something like "Support Celiac Disease Research" or something catchier.
  2. Back to the topic: celiac3270, I assume you've been tested for pancreatic insufficiency and other food intolerances?
  3. Yes, No, Female
  4. You could go to Open Original Shared Link and create your own in two dialects of chinese. Have a chinese reader check it though!
  5. Sometimes baked chips are baked on floured surfaces to prevent sticking so even though wheat may not be an "ingredient" the chips may have picked up trace amounts from the cooking surface. For this reason I only eat oil-based chips.
  6. My heart goes out to you! I have a theory that as the intestines heal the new tissue is more sensitive to certain foods. It may take more time than you had hoped to feel really good. Hang in there!
  7. Speaking of unlikely sources, it might be good to mention again these: envelope and stamp glue and communion wafers.
  8. Your doctor sounds very with it and I'd follow his orders. You don't have to eat lots and lots of gluten. Might as well indulge in the gluten items that taste good during this last fling! For weight gain, I recommend coconut oil--it's a fat that's more easily absorbed than most fats. I gained weight on that before I discovered I have celiac disease...
  9. A couple people asked about the Actonel I take for osteoporosis. I do have side effects from it but they are subsiding quite a bit as time goes on (on it it 4+ months now). My side effects are vivid dreams (weird one, not mentioned in the insert at all), headaches, and arthritis-like pain mostly in my hands; but the latter 2 are easily dealt with with Advil...
  10. I'm surprised. I always got my orders from them within a week. You might call them to see if there is a problem with your order.
  11. I'm soy intolerant too, so I drink Rice Dreams or Better Than Milk Rice Drink. The latter tastes better and is cheaper but it's a powder you have to mix with water (ok I'm lazy). I tried Almond milk and Hazelnut and they are both good but unfortunately they include soy. I was a major milk drinker most of my life but now I don't miss it at all.
  12. See: Open Original Shared Link
  13. McDougall, welcome. Your post struck a chord with many of us as you can see! Everyone's experience can be a bit different and it DOES take time to heal, so don't get discouraged if you still have bad days. Also, I encourage everyone with celiac disease to consider other food sensitivities. Milk, yeast, eggs, soy, and corn are among the very common problem...
  14. imsohungry, I'm wondering if you have other food allergies, such as corn? (Thinking about the grits you had for breakfast?) I did the York Labs allergies test (expensive but so worth it) and discovered I need to avoid: milk, yeast, eggs, soy, cashew, sunflower seeds and pears. Truly, if I avoid all these, I feel infinitely better. I think enterolab...

I use the Clan Thompson list on my Pocket PC. It is worth paying for. It's a lot of work keeping these lists and ingredients in processed food are constantly changing.
  16. I'm joining the Irish, Scotch-Irish, English crowd! I have one brother with a weak positive (blood test and endoscopy), another tested negative. I suspect very strongly my mother had a bad case that was never diagnosed before she died.
  17. Many cities in Florida have Whole Foods markets that have a variety of gluten-free foods as well as organic produce to offer. Have fun! Florida is so beautiful!
  18. You might want to get tested for other food allergies. If your doctor won't order the test, you can get one yourself from York Labs (which I did) or another place. I feel best avoiding: gluten, dairy, yeast (includes vinegar and (sigh) wine--I recently found Ener-G foods has a powdered yeast-free vinegar which I like)), soy (big one!), eggs, cashews,...
  19. In my life I've spent too many years wanting to please other people and hiding my true self when I thought I would not. Finding a way to shrug off petty criticisms with a joke or indifference are good ways of dealing with them. With age and confidence, I've learned, usually, that I don't have to do/be what others want when that is not in my best interest...
  20. I too laughed out loud about the celica! Definitely would rather have a celica than celiac! I've been tired for years, getting worse and worse. I was checked for anemia, thyroid problems, even sleep apnea. Finally they found a B12 deficiency and treated that without seeking out the underlying cause. Got the "it's all in your head" and went on Prozac...
  21. Adenosine Triphosphate. It's an over-the-counter supplement I bought at bayho.com. It can be swallowed or left to dissolve under the tongue (sublingual) which I think allows better absorption.
  22. OK, out to eat with friends on Saturday night. I do my usual routine with my dining card at a restaurant where I've done this before. I was assured my shrimp scampi had no wheat. I ate one delicious morsel and notice crusty bits floating about in the yummy garlic butter sauce so I question the waitress who checks and comes back to say "Oh no, honey, there...
  23. It sounds like something in addition to celiac disease. A few ideas occurred to me as I read your post. I'm not a medical person so don't let me scare you; these may be farfetched! 1. Apnea (Do you snore? Wake up struggling? Wake up with cover askew? Apnea causes extreme fatigue to the point of narcolepsy). 2. Narcolepsy 3. Mysthenia Gravis...
  24. All I had to do was call their 800 number, tell them my flights a few days in advance and they took care of it. However, one meal included a roll with no ingredients listed so I avoided it. All in all, a good experience--thank you, American Airlines!!!!
  25. I like "Dangerous Grains."
