ARCHIVED Feeling Pretty Sad About The Whole Gluten-Free Thing Right Now
Azenka replied to GF in BC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Liver!! Super cheap, super full of metals. If you hate the taste, caramelized onions and bacon will balance out the taste. Ironized yeast if you can find it. Helped my mom years ago, and she cannot tolerate supplements also. But, uh, she can't find ironized yeast either. -
ARCHIVED Working In A Kitchen With Gluten Foods
Azenka replied to hrenee101's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tried working as a cashier at a grocery store fairly a few months ago, and simply from the bags of flour and boxes of pancake mix getting on my clothes and my hands, I found I was getting glutened. Maybe if I hadn't needed a water bottle because I need it, or if it hadn't been constantly busy so I could, say, see someone with a flour product and call over... -
ARCHIVED Who Is Responsible For Making Sure There's Something Safe To Eat?
Azenka replied to maria714's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It being a church, particularly if it's a small, inclusive sort of church, I would be a little shocked that -someone- wouldn't go out of their way to provide food for food sensitive members of the church. Isn't that sort of kindness and attention that one would expect from a church? Don't get me wrong, I wholly think that it's the mother's responsibility... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Want Celiacs Anymore
Azenka replied to justjess22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The worst glutening symptom for me is depression. It's a b%$@# because of course, when it happens, I want to not care about my diet too. And it takes a while for me to feel better afterwards too. And because mood is so subjective anyways, I don't even know necessarily if I've been glutened or I just feel like crap for other things. It's hard because it sabotages... -
What Does Everyone Eat For Breakfast?
Azenka replied to plumbago's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Eggs, nearly every morning. I sometimes make buckwheat banana pancakes with apple cider instead of milk or water. Soooo good. Scrambled eggs with onion is standard. Sometimes I melt Daiya in them (cheese substitute), sometimes hot sauce, sometimes ketchup, sometimes mushrooms, peppers and/or tomato (I would have tomato more but partner hates it)... -
Too much B6 is also a known cause of neuropathy and nerve damage, (a source, but I've read other, better ones years ago) Open Original Shared Link Other source I've read showed that even 50mg a day can be too much for some. Unfortunately every B vitamin complex seems to have a minimum of 50mg of it. B12 deficiency can cause neuropathy, as can folate (it...

New Grist makes a light beer from sorghum I like a lot. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Waves Of Depression Post Exposure?
Azenka replied to MermaidPaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unfortunately I don't deal well with my own emotions. Periods of intense depression, outbursts of anger and anxiety that I now associate with undiagnosed celiac disease are why I don't have a career. Short-term though, realizing that it's not you but something else controlling you, paradoxically, can help a lot. It WILL pass, and you'll probably find patterns... -

ARCHIVED Pete's Coffee Question
Azenka replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Coffee can be cross contaminated. If this is your issue, you're probably just lucky the Costco brand hasn't bothered you yet either. -
ARCHIVED Becoming More Sensitive Over Time?
Azenka replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used to regularly have hot and cold spells, feeling like I'd always have a low-grade fever but never actually did, prior to diagnosis. They were one of my first symptoms to largely just disappear thankfully. -
Just a general rant. I'm sick of this, every time I eat something that I -should- be able to have, it's like 'nope, can't have that'. Can't have coffee, can't have chocolate, can't have sulfites, the popsicles I'm eating I probably shouldn't be, that bouillon probably not safe, daiya might not be safe, my stash of spices might not be safe. I can't tell anymore...

ARCHIVED Vodka
Azenka replied to Patt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ty for the link, good read I would not be surprised if ncgi were just another manifestation of celiac disease. Rather, that celiac disease itself is just a highly specific form of what's basically the same thing. -
ARCHIVED Vodka
Azenka replied to Patt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe people who say they have reactions to certain alcohols, and I also believe people who don't have reactions to those same alcohols. If I don't understand how something works, I ask. That's why I'm asking. To tell me 'it's fine that you don't understand something' when I'm asking to understand something is completely misreading the intent of the... -
ARCHIVED Vodka
Azenka replied to Patt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So what happens if some of the gluten molecules get broken down before distillation happens and the distillation process isn't refined enough to get rid the fractions of molecules? We already know there's variability in what some celiacs react to (eg: oats) also, so it seems very possible that some celiacs could have autoimmune reactions to only fragments... -
ARCHIVED So Good Soy Milks
Azenka replied to Azenka's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
While we're on it, what about their ice cream? Specifically, does anyone have casein sensitivity react to it? They only advertise as lactose free. -
ARCHIVED Vodka
Azenka replied to Patt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't get why different distilled vodkas all taste different from each other when all they're supposed to be is alcohol due to the distillation. I would drink lab-grade ethyl alcohol made from anything, I trust science. I'm just not sure I trust vodka manufacturers. I have no personal experience one way or the other reacting to it, I've just avoided it... -

Anyone ever react to this product and what's your sensitivity level generally? -
ARCHIVED Why Do I Have Symptoms From Activity?
Azenka replied to CaliSparrow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel worse when I overdo the exersise, and when I say overdo don't mean pushing myself at the gym. A full day's work of not-hard physical labor will make my peripheral neuropathy worse (biggest indicator of gluten ingestions) and of course make my overall feel like I've got the flu. Also pretty sure I've been glutened by dry wall compound, but then again... -
ARCHIVED How To Make My Bread Fluffier?
Azenka replied to Sand3's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This is coming from a non-baker, but the best homemade gluten free buns I've eaten, that were squishy and pretty soft and very tasty, seemed to have A LOT of oil.- 4 replies

All you can do is explain as you've done for us. It seems that you're doing very well with it already, I think. Your uncomfortable friend will either get used to it or, well, they won't. The level of depth you get into explaining yourself to your friend really depends on how close the two of you are. 1 person being uncomfortable doesn't, to me, make...

ARCHIVED Taking This Too Seriously, Or Not Seriously Enough? Get Rid Of Pets Too?
Azenka replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It took me awhile to notice what my gluten-ingestion symptoms were. Your entire family may notice things once you're gluten free for awhile. It sounds like a good policy to adopt is a strict 'no hands in your mouth' rule for both you and your kids. No fingernail biting, teeth picking, etc, unless you've just washed your hands. If this is followed your...
