    Nik, my DH doesn't always form into blisters. I get it rarely now, but when I do it's raised red splotches that hurt (not much itching). Sometines a sore that appears alone will blister after a day or two, but not always. They look like the picture of the breakout on the person's back about halfway down this article (though thankfully, never this bad)...
