    (516) 656-4545

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Sea Cliff, NY -- January 13, 2006 -- Robert's American Gourmet of Sea Cliff, NY is recalling 153 cases (12 packages per case) of Robert's American Gourmet WHEAT FREE CHAOS Snack Mix as a precaution because a small number of packages may contain undeclared wheat (wheat pretzels). People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

Robert's American Gourmet WHEAT FREE CHAOS was distributed to distributors located in NJ, MA, CT, ME, NH, IN, CA, GA, and PA.

The product was sold in 6 oz. plastic bags with a “SELL BY DATE” MAR2806 (corresponds to March 28, 2006), and UPC # 15665 41025 5.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that some packages of the WHEAT FREE CHAOS actually contain wheat pretzels which were not listed on the label. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a scheduling error at the manufacturing plant. Production was temporarily ceased and the problem has been corrected.

Consumers who have purchased Robert's American Gourmet WHEAT FREE CHAOS, GLUTEN FREE Snack Mix are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-626-7557.

So even when you think you are eating the right stuff, you may not be!!!

  2. I am wondering if there are any books on the market that refer to the asymptomatic celiac disease patient? Also, are there any books that are written just for children with celiac disease?

I am finding that there are sooooo many books out there, and reading the forum here I am finding out that they are not all good books. I don't want to spend a furtune buying books that will give me the wrong information. I know that so many of you have already done the reading, so your advice is taken seriously.

    Thanks!

  3. when you say his blood tests came back positive, are meaning positive that his antibodies are raised, or just positive that he has the gene? just having the gene itself does not mean he will get celiac.

    christine

I wish I had been home to get the call, but my husband talked the Dr and (god love him) he does not think to ask all the questions I would have wanted to ask. I have left a message for the Dr to call me back so I can get more information. I am not sure if the Dr stated antibodies or the gene were present or both.

We both really like this Dr. he is very thorough and seems to be on top of things.

"just having the gene itself does not mean he will get celiac".

If he has just the gene, then I should be ok with the wait and see approach??

I can't wait for the Dr to call back next week!!!!

  4. So, If I am understanding correctly, if natural flavorings is listed and the company is on the LIST of companys that don't hide Gluten, then Gluten will clearly be listed on the label? If the company it is not on the LIST then I would need to do more research, such as calling the company to determine if their Natural flavoring contains gluten?

it is all so confusing???? how do you ever get it straight???? i feel as if I need to go to the market with my huge pile of print outs/ notes to figure everything out.

  5. OK, obviously it is not natural if we need to be concerned about gluten . A "natural flavor" should be ....well.....natural,... right!! I am thinking that in Tomatoe soup for example, natural flavorings would be the flavor of the tomatoes. I am very confused by this. How do we know if natural flavoring has gluten or it doesnt?

I am hoping that someone understands this better than me. Thanks!

  6. well the Dr called today and said that my 8 yr old sons blood tests came back postive. He said he has the celiac gene but since he has absolutely no symptoms, he said he does not need to go gluten-free. He suggested taking calcium, vitamen D and iron. My son is healthy, in the 85th percentile height and weight. The Dr said that if his growth should slow, then he would take a sample from the intestines?? I am happy about this as the thought of working with a child to remain gluten-free is a difficult task at best, but I would do it if it were necessary.

What are you thoughts on this? have you heard of this option before and how does it fare? I don't want to find out years later that I attributed to making my son sick, but I dont want him to go gluten-free if it is not medically necessary either.

My husb was DX in mid Dec (blood test only) and he is asymptomatic also, but based on his age, 45 the Dr said it was best to go gluten-free.

Has anyone gotten a 2nd opinion on their test results before making life altertering changes?

Thanks for the guidance, I don't know where I would be with out everyone here!!!

  7. I want to make nachos surpreme for dinner this saturday night. I usually season ground beef with a packet of Taco seasoning, place over the nachos, top with cheese and melt away!! Then I will add salsa, & sour cream, my family loves it. I make this when we sit down to for a game night at the kitchen table. good picking food, just not sure if I can make it since my husb was diagnosed wit celiac disease.

  8. When you begin going gluten-free, you will also need to elminate those products which have gluten--ie. shampoos, conditioners, body washes, makeup, lipstick etc. We can help you with those. This is important b/c products we use on our bodies can make their way into our mouths, and additionally, some folks have skin reactions to gluten. If you have Celiac, you must be 100% gluten-free, no splurges or sneaking. Even a miniscle amount of gluten can do you harm.

I thought you only had to eliminate the nonfood items that contain gluten if you had dermatitis herpetaformis. My husband does not have dermatitis herpetaformis, so are you saying that I need to eliminate the gluten in all the nonfood items for him as well? I thought I had a handle on all this but now I am confused. My husb has no symptoms of GD, only a positve blood test.

  9. Hi, I am new here. My husb was DX 2 weeks ago with Celiac (his mom has it too) and this board has been very valuable in educating me since I do the shopping and cooking in the family. Well, I took my 8 yr old son in for testing tuesday and the Dr called last night and said that his blood test came back "suspicious" and the antibodies were high. He will confir next week with the Gastroenterologist to see what he thinks. (This is the same Gastroenterologist that my mother in law and husband see). From your experiences with your own kids, do you have an opinion of what high antibodies mean?? Could it be a sign of something else?? He did not tell me what the actual #'s were. Does anyone know of the acceptable levels? My husband has no symptoms of celiac disease, but the Dr has recommends a gluten-free diet to prevent it. My son has no symptoms either, except he bulches frequently. I am really afraid the dr will call back with a positive diagnosis. Should I ask for further testing?

I appreciate any info you can send my way. THANKS!!
