ARCHIVED Everyone is telling me something different
Washingtonmama posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't see my GI for several months to ask these questions, so I thought I would ask all of you. I'm not having the endoscopy done, so I'm ok to go gluten-free right now. One friend has a brother and his children with Celiac. They are very strict, replaced all pans, plastic, wood utensils etc. My dentist and an aquatience said they just eat gluten free,... -
ARCHIVED We might be glutening ourselves with our purses!
Washingtonmama replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have to carry around snacks for my son with low blood sugar. If there isn't a trashcan near by, I jut have him throw the wrapper back into my purse. Hence the tiny crumbs. I sometimes carry a snack bar in my purse for me too, same reason. I was just diagnosed a few days ago, and I thought we were supposed to avoid little crumbs, like if I rummaged around... -
ARCHIVED How do I go out to eat?!
Washingtonmama replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Squirmingitch, I am beginning to agree that eating out is playing Russian Roulette. Its the most upsetting thing about the diagnosis. I LOVE eating out. We don't do it very often, its expensive so its a treat when we do. I love not having to cook, trying new dishes. How upsetting the chef you had wasn't careful and didn't follow instructions. There are people... -
ARCHIVED Dont get mad, but whats the big deal about 20 PPM?
Washingtonmama replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ennis, all I can say is OMG to what happened to you at the restaurant! Geeze! Can you actually die from that kind of reaction? Is there anything they can do at the hospital to help? -

Washingtonmama replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ok I understand now. You eat a tiny particle of gluten, and your body, in trying to protect itself, actually attacks itself. It keeps attacking and doing damage for a few weeks, even though you have no idea what's going on. Is that correct? Thanks for your help everyone! -
ARCHIVED I'm NOT getting the endoscopy done.
Washingtonmama replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good gosh, you had a horrible time. How sad doctors rarely listen. We know what is going on with our bodies, all we need for them to do is take it seriously. That could have saved you years of misery. Thank you or explaining the test results so plainly. My doctor has been on vacation since she ordered the test, so I won't find out anything for another week... -
I know what it means, and some people are SEVERELY sensitive to it. I have almost no symptoms when I get a tiny bit of gluten. I get gunk running down the back of my throat for a day or two, maybe diarrhea if I eat a bite of something with wheat. What kind of damage does a fraction of gluten do? How severe is it? How long does it last? Do I even need to avoid...

ARCHIVED Am I going crazy after Celiac disease confirmed?
Washingtonmama replied to Kathouse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Kathouse, some people need time to grieve. I think its great you are forcing yourself to go out. I never had any luck with that, so glad you can! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Ataxia confusion...
Washingtonmama replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ennis, what a loving mom you have! You really should go clean her house for her. I would love that if my kids did that for me. -

Washingtonmama replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As a whole, doctors are so frustrating!!! They may be experts in their field, but WE know our children best. They need to listen to what we are saying. We don't just bring our children to a doctor's office for grins and giggles. I get so tired of hearing "oh no it can't be that problem, that never happens with _______". Well, not everyone's body knows about... -

Watch out for a mama on a mission to help her child. You are doing a grat job! I think you have figured out the problem, all the pieces of the puzzle that you have written about seem to fit the gluten ataxia diagnosis. I know it must be really stressful when dealing with the misery your daughter is in, add in SPD and oh my gosh. I have two boys with Autism... -

Your post really caught my attention. I have had anxiety all of my life. My earliest memories are of anxious (but normal to every average child) childhood events. I know anxiety. This is a life changing diagnosis, it's no surprise your anxiety would be off the charts! And you had a procedure done, with medications you aren't used to. All new and all anxiety... -
ARCHIVED We might be glutening ourselves with our purses!
Washingtonmama posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am newly diagnosed but learning fast. I was cleaning out my purse and noticed crumbs in the bottom of my purse. How many times a day do we reach in there, use a pen from our purse etc., then touch our face or mouth? Or maybe I'm just more of a slob than the average woman lol Just thought I'd mention it. -
ARCHIVED I'm NOT getting the endoscopy done.
Washingtonmama replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Those test acronyms are all Greek to me lol So for most labs under 20 is normal. If yours were 10x that, they were in the 200 range! Geeze. Did you have a lot of symptoms? I havent heard from my GI doctor yet. What do my labs mean other than two being labeled as high? I had a Celiac panel done six months ago, which came back negative. No one told me I had... -

I just realized someone said there is a test kit to see if your food has gluten. That's awesome! -

You guys are awesome!! Thank you for your help. This is a local family owned place. I think I will just do like you all suggested and just bring my own food. Its my first time doing this, but if I act like its not a big deal, everyone will hopefully take a cue from me and will not freak out about it and ask me a million questions. Ill have to try PF Changs... -
My adult daughter and I were both recently diagnosed with Celiac. We have a big family dinner at a local Chinese restaurant coming up. Are we stuck with plain rice, and maybe stir fried veggies? I have no idea what questions to ask, who to ask, how to be certain they didn't cross contaminate the food, or what to eat. We dont want to cancel because this is...

Ennis, I am so jealous. I really wish I could wake up feeling like you! Ravenwoodglass, that was a horrid experience you had. Didnt the doctor know you were still awake? I know I can get the endoscopy done under general anesthsia, but i always have problems with anesthesia. Either Im dry heaving for 24 hours, cant stay awake for three days etc. And I start... -

I had one done in October to look for an ulcer (caused by using Motrin, don't take that stuff!) They barely had time to look around because even with the max dosage of four medications, (I was only supposed to get two) the doctor said I was fighting too much to finish the procedure. I was shaking like crazy when I woke up and my blood pressure was pretty... -
ARCHIVED Testing and biopsy

My daughter just had hers done. They said everything looked normal during the procedure, but her biopsies showed otherwise.
