Thank you, all who responded. @trents, I certainly will be asking numerous detailed questions of people who have celiac disease and other conditions; I avoided doing so in my introductory post because I first wanted to connect with those who are willing to talk to me. Once we speak by phone or email, I always get much more information. I appreciate your suggestions...

Hello, all. I'm the mother of a celiac sufferer as well as a journalist. I'm doing a story for Gluten Free & More magazine about the link between celiac disease and other autoimmune conditions. I'd love to hear your story, if you're interested in being quoted. Were you diagnosed with celiac and then another condition? How do you manage both or all? Thanks...

ARCHIVED looking to interview DH sufferers for national magazine
ljgs posted a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi, all. I'm a longtime member of this group as the mother of a celiac patient. I'm also a professional writer doing a story for a national magazine about DH. I'm speaking to physicians, but I'd also love to talk to a couple of DH sufferers about their experiences. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of info out there about DH. So I'd like to know: What has... -
Thank you all for replying. Yes, posterboy, I got tested as soon as my daughter was diagnosed, and have been tested occasionally since.

Hi, all. I'm a professional writer (and mother of a young adult with celiac) who is working on a magazine story about the special considerations of celiac disease in pregnancy. Would anyone on this board be willing to be interviewed about their experience? I'd love to know what advice your doctor and/or nutritionist gave you, what you ate, if you supplemented...

ARCHIVED Venting About Lazy In-Laws
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I'm the original poster here. Thank you SO MUCH, everyone, for your responses, whether to commiserate or ask me to clarify things. I truly appreciate it! Just to clear a few things up...my teen is really pretty chill about her celiac. She has been taking her own food everywhere for awhile. To be honest, this issue is my own irritation with my mother-in... -
ARCHIVED Venting About Lazy In-Laws
ljgs posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Grrrr.....I just need to vent. My 16-year-old was diagnosed 3 1/2 years ago, so all the grandparents have had plenty of time to get educated and used to this. My mother is an excellent cook, and my parents always go out of their way to be careful during holiday dinners so my daughter has safe choices. If my kids are staying at their house, they will have... -
ARCHIVED Terrified Of Diabetes
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It certainly is good to know I'm not alone!!! While I do my best not to worry about things that are unlikely or largely out of my control, when I hear about someone being diagnosed, I do worry about my daughter. She has the DQ2.5 gene, but then again almost all celiacs do. And her father has both DQ2.5 AND DQ8 and is neither celiac or diabetic. So the odds... -
My 15-year-old daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease two years ago this week. She has been extremely compliant with the diet and her antibody levels quickly normalized. But I remain terrified that she will develop Type 1 diabetes. Every time I hear about someone developing this disease, I worry all over again. There is a lot of talk about diabetic children...

ARCHIVED Mother Nature's Gift To Women
ljgs replied to maximoo's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Maximoo, if your daughter has only been gluten-free for six months, there's a good chance that eating gluten all those years affected her nutritional absorption and is the reason she is still petite. Now that her body is absorbing nutrients, she may catch up in height. On the other hand, her father is quite short and so she may very well top out just over... -
ARCHIVED Is There Something Called "contamination Celiac"?
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I understand that some celiacs don't have any outward reaction to gluten--my teenage daughter does not get any of the obvious symptoms that hit some celiacs so hard, but her diagnostic biopsy last year showed enormous damage to her intestines. My concern is for people who believe they are okay with a little contamination because they don't "feel" it, when... -
ARCHIVED Is There Something Called "contamination Celiac"?
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks, all, for agreeing with me. When I met the father last year and he told me that she eats soy sauce, I immediately wondered what the deal was with this family. Also, the mom told me that after being diagnosed at age two they never bothered getting the kid any further bloodwork or follow-up testing. My daughter was diagnosed a year ago and we have been... -
ARCHIVED Is There Something Called "contamination Celiac"?
ljgs posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A friend of a friend has a college-age daughter with celiac disease, and she says that the girl was tested for something called "contamination celiac," which is when you are sensitive to the remnants of gluten. Apparently this girl is able to eat cold cuts lifted directly off bread or pick croutons out of the salad and then consume the salad without any ill... -
My 14-year-old is visiting London for the first time with her grandparents this coming April. She is 7 months gluten free and normally does very well. She knows how to read labels and how to ask for things in restaurants, and her grandparents have been well prepped. They're staying in a flat with a kitchen, so breakfast will not be a problem, and I have scouted...

ARCHIVED Should I Take My Son Off Gluten?
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, all. He was tested for celiac antibodies and was definitely negative. And you're right--he is not that short. In fact, we took him to an endocrinologist last year who said there was absolutely no cause for concern. So I do feel a little like I'm overreacting by taking him off gluten. But it turns out, now that I've really scrutinized my pantry, that... -
ARCHIVED At What Age Was Your Child/children Diagnosed Celiac?
ljgs replied to salexander421's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter was 13. She had been having on and off stomach pains through 7th grade. Nothing debilitating, but I just felt something might be "off." Boy, was it ever! -
ARCHIVED Should I Take My Son Off Gluten?
ljgs posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 13-year-old daughter was dx with celiac six months ago. Her bloodwork was sky-high and the biopsy showed damage. She's done beautifully on a gluten-free diet. My 10-year-old has no obvious symptoms of celiac and his bloodwork was negative. The only issue has had had is that he is on the short side, maybe in the 20-25th percentile while the rest of us are... -
ARCHIVED Udi's New Bread
ljgs replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found it this week at Whole Foods in NJ. My daughter, who is not a fan of raisins, gasped audibly when I made her two slices of French toast last night using the bread. It was so good, we made more French toast and she reheated it this morning for breakfast. A definite thumbs-up! -
ARCHIVED Are They Gluten Free Cookies Or Not?
ljgs replied to norahsmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sure she had all good intentions, but don't take a chance. Bake some gluten-free cookies yourself and just keep smiling. -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Bacon Wrapped Beef Or Scallops?
ljgs posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Anyone know if the TJ's bacon-wrapped beef and bacon-wrapped scallop dishes in the freezer section are gluten-free? They don't seem to have any gluten ingredients, but they don't appear in the official TJ's gluten-free list. Corporate never e-mailed me back so I'm waiting for a call back from my local store, which said they'd contact the buyer and ask. Want... -
ARCHIVED Bloodwork Results Are Back--Great News!
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you, all! It's not perfect yet. Her gliadin IgA was 6, down from 135, and her gliadin IgG was 62, down from 140. I'm not sure why the latter number is still so much higher than the other two. Anyone? But the doc said the gliadin tests are less specific than the TTG, so that's the main one they go by. She also said they are not recommending a follow... -
ARCHIVED Bloodwork Results Are Back--Great News!
ljgs posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Many of you listened and consoled me when my 13-year-old daughter was diagnosed in July. At the time, her TTG IgA levels were at 169, which is ridiculously high. I'm so happy to report that today her doctor called with the news that her recent bloodwork showed her TTG levels are now at 6!!!!! I was hoping for anything under 80. Needless to say, this is the... -
We are driving up to Quebec City for a couple of days over Christmas, staying at the Chateau Frontenac. They said they can prepare gluten-free breakfasts for us, but what about restaurants for dinner? The only thing that keeps turning up in a search is a place called Lapin Saute. Anyone have any others? And are there safe places for breakfast and/or lunch...

ARCHIVED Tissue Transglutaminase Antibody
ljgs replied to Joy2008's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You are doing GREAT!!!!! My daughter is only 3 1/2 months into her gluten-free journey but I would kill for numbers like yours at her six-month checkup. From what I understand, it can take longer than six months to get rid of those last few pesky antibodies. -
ARCHIVED Watch Out For This Halloween Candy
ljgs replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, Tootsie Rolls are definitely gluten free. And I did some more digging and found that there are many varieties of Sour Punch candies. I don't know if they all have wheat but worth checking out. It's made by a company called American Licorice, I think.
