My, we're getting hostile, aren't we? My conviction is that Celiacs vary in their sensitvity. Just trying to be practical that's all. A celiac may be in a situation where they have to chose between Taco Bell and going hungry.
Steve
You have fun with that. Even the COMPANY tells you to stay away from it, and it's not good enough for you. I'm assuming that in this scenario where the celiac has to choose between the taco or going hungry, Taco Bell no longer makes pintos and cheese or steak bowls with no jalepeno sauce?
I agree with Jessica, you're free to knowingly ingest gluten, but please don't suggest to others that they do the same. Taco Bell does have gluten-free options.

It's gluten-free.

Wow! This fast reply thing is awesome!
And the OMG thread...the thread so big it needed it's own section
-
Chelsea -- have beer too.
No way! I don't want that kind of punishment! Beer absolutely tears me up.
Although at this point, how would I know the difference
-
skittles are wheat free. they are bad for people with celiac.
Why, other than the sugar?
-
Of course, always check the label, but last time I checked, Kraft Blue Cheese Dressing is gluten-free.
Kraft will always disclose gluten clearly as wheat, barley, rye, or oats. They never hide gluten under things like "natural flavors".

My mom has low sodium, resulting mostly in low blood pressure. She was hospitalized once and was made to drink tons of tomato juice and eat saltine crackers, etc. etc. She thinks everything tastes salty, even if it's not.
I'd get tested again, low blood minerals are nothing to mess around with...
-
Ok, why can I see this on the forums page under "last post info" but I don't see it when I click on the Message Board???
Well, anyway, thanks for the replies! My dr of course isn't discussing celiac with me because I couldn't have because it's just too rare...
Geeze, doctors. Just because you go to medical school and graduate doesn't mean that the medical world stops spinning and all facts remain static
Bring him some of the latest research articles showing that celiac disease occurs in as many as 1 in 133 people...

Wasn't it you that had the rash on your face a few weeks/months ago? Did you have that checked out (sorry, can't remember, and I can't even use the brain fog thing)? I remember (sort of) that Lupus was brought up, but can't remember if you had it checked out.
Yeah, I didn't have it checked out, may ask the dr next time I go in. That is why I did all that lupus research, because of the redness on my face and across my nose.
I just determined that I'm a redhead and as such, I'm always blushing
That Irish blood is causing me all kinds of problems

IBS = I Be Stumped
Syndrome usually means that you have symptoms that go into the same barrel as other people's symptoms that are similar, but they don't know why either of you have them.

My mom had osteo in her knees (SEVERE) before she got her knees replaced (she's really young, only in her early 50's) and she says that she avoided wheat because it made her arthritis worse. As far as we know, she doesn't have celiac (though she hasn't been tested yet).
Rheumatoid arthritis is the one associated with celiac because they're both autoimmune. Osteoarthritis is more of a mechanical problem, as I understand it.

Chelse, you crack me up.
How's the "all gluten, all the time" going??
I have heard that some hives are heat induced hives, and there is such thing as cold induced hives, both brought on by extreme temperature changes. Also by the sun, or for example jumping into a cold river.
I don't know if the sun induced hives are exclusive to lupus......
All gluten all the time both sucks and blows
I'm eating a disgusting amount of food in order to keep that reaction going all week!
I didn't mean that the sun rashes are exclusive to lupus, I just remember from my previous lupus research that they can occur... just throwing some ideas out there
More scientificness regarding hives:Hives can be caused by allergic or non-allergic mechanisms . In a majority of chronic cases, the exact cause is unknown.
Often hives are caused by an adverse reaction to some food or drug. Foods likely to cause hives include chocolate, nuts, tomatoes, shellfish, and berries. Drugs often responsible for producing hives are penicillin, sulfa, anticonvulsants, phenobarbital, as well as aspirin, or food colored by tartrazine, which is yellow food dye #5.
A common cause of hives is dermatographism , which occurs in 5% of the population. It is caused by stroking of the skin or rubbing as occurs with scratching or tight-fitting garments .
I get these kind, but only since I've been eating gluten again. I usually get scratching induced hives on my arms, and then random patches everywhere else. It's worse at night, and I get hives all over my butt and left thigh
I'm in the same boat...don't know what's causing all the damn itching. I could buy stock in cortaid and benadryl
So I'm no help, but just letting you know I have similar problems.
Yah, I've only heard of the one other person (besides you now) that had it and I didn't know her personally.I have that happen, too. Usually if I've been running around outside, I always attributed it to pollen riding up my pants.
-
Yep, definitely worse when it's hot...if sun directly hits my legs, it's almost unbearable. But it also happens in winter, so the heat isn't the only thing going on...maybe they're so much more itchy now because it's been so hot this summer.

Aren't rashes that get worse in the sun a symptom of lupus?

Well.......I am new to this whole experience, but I have the feeling that this will not be a good day............
I have a meet and greet fundraiser and need to be able to speak more than two words to these folks..........talk about feeling foggy and lloking like a great white beluga whale!
I am trying.................
I guess I need to re-read Emerson
"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. (Ralph Waldo Emerson) sg"
Try drinking a Red Bull, I find it helps with the brain fog after a glutening
Yes, it's gluten-free. It's also chock-full of b-vitamins

How about sharing the recipe for those of us who don't have the book.
Thanks
One reason is that the recipe is copyrighted...but maybe the recipe will encourage you to buy the book.
GRANOLA from The Gluten Free Gourmet by Bette Hagman
6 c. gluten-free Puffed Rice
1 c. Dry Roasted Soybeans
1 c. Unsweetened Flake Coconut
1 c. Sunflower Seeds (if unsalted, add 1.2 tsp salt)
1/4c. Honey
1/4 c. Vegetable oil
2 c. Raisins
Preheat oven to 225. Grease a large roaster with vegetable oil spray. Put in the rice, soybeans, coconut, and sunflower seeds.
Combine oil and honey in a saucepan and heat to boiling. Watch and stir constantly, because honey tends to boil over very quickly. Remove from heat and drizzle over the mixture in the roaster. Stir in well.
Bake at 225 for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes to keep from sticking. Add raisins and turn off oven. Put pan back in the oven and let the granola cool and dry out (this can be done overnight).
Makes 10 cups, 20 servings.
(Each serving has 4 weight watchers points, BTW)

Are you sure you aren't allergic to the medication itself?
-
Ok, first of all, HUGS to you!!!!!! When I first went milk-free I used to get the rotten egg burps every time I slipped. Yuck!!
Second, being a newbie I'll ask the stupid question.....pressed canola oil has gluten in it???
Canola oil is gluten-free, it comes from rape seed, which is part of the mustard family.
Sorry you aren't feeling well, chgomom!

Wheat didn't show up because celiac isn't an allergy. It's an autoimmune intolerance and stirs up different types of antibodies from allergies.
She may be lactose intolerant because her villi are still damaged from the celiac, and lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose) is produced on the tips of the villi. That would cause the gas and bloating after having dairy.

What about bat poop?
What happens to all those eaten mosquitos while those bats are skimming you?
Having said that, I think I'd like to see those swarming bats...but if I ever go there I will go in rain attire, lol.
They don't poop on takeoff
I was standing below the swarm and turned out clean and dry at the end of it. The worst part was grass on my butt from sitting
-
Trust me, I definately would not have been standing out there alone ... it's a tourist attraction, but not quite as many people as bats!!
There were probably a good 300-400 people there when I was there on a friday night between the on the bridge and below it. Trust me, it's really really cool!!!
-
Chelse, I didn't realize bats were classified as animals. Don't you mean they are your favorite rodent with wings, or flying creepy things??
Bats are my favorite mammal
Are you a fan of squirrels? They're just rats with cuter outfits, and they don't even do anything useful like eat mosquitoes
OK, so they plant trees...but the trees don't bite me!
-
General Mills clearly labels gluten as wheat, barley, rye or oats...
So if you don't see any of those 4 words, you're safe! Enjoy!
-
It's a minor procedure, but I guess it can be classified as major surgery, especially if he's high risk for whatever reason, you never know. It does sound as though she's freaking out, though...
-
Hey, I've seen those Austin bats fly out at dusk! It's really pretty cool. I was born in Austin & have relatives there so visit now & then. It would be a cool city if it weren't so durn HOT! (105 when I visited June before last...)
HURRAY your challenge is almost over!!!!
It's 100 here today, I don't even notice it anymore...probably because of the A/C!!!
I went a few weeks ago to see the bats, they are really cool! Bats are my 2nd favorite animal, first being penguins (really?!?!)

I've been walking around like that since Saturday. Wasn't supposed to be that color...that's what I get for being too naturally red and trying to get my hair dyed a different color red. Back to the hair lady tomorrow
I enjoy that...it keeps us up to date with Molly
