  1. Bergen Co. is in north Jersey?? I am in Salem Co. in south Jersey. We go to Whole Foods and some mom and pop health food places nearby. Pathmark also offers a few items. I do most of my shopping at Whole Foods though or online. Resturants are not a biggie right now as my little one is only 16 months and just pack things right now. Bakeries in this area are nill! There is Mr. Ritz in Philly just over the bridge. They are supposed to be opening one near me too but I think I will have grey hair before that happens!! LOL! You can order by phone from Mr. Ritz. They just will not ship decorated cakes but most everything else you can order. They will, however, ship cake blanks if you know someone who can decorate. Look online for Mr. Ritz bakery or I can locate the link if you like.

  2. Wow have you all opened my eyes to the future! I haven't looked past today! I know in my school they have to provide food for your child but it does make me wonder how accurate they would be. I think I would be worried and reading and double reading everything. Like the spelt bread. It was the parents responsibility to make sure that food was ok. Should never rely on someone else to know 100%. I like my peanut at 16 months. I have totaly control! Wonder if I can stall time?! LOL!

  3. Patti- YOu use the GFP french bread as a sandwich bread? It works? It is lighter than the actually sandwich bread? Hummm might try it.

Has anyone tried Glutino Corn bread? I bought it to try thinking it was a corn bread but is looks just like a white bread just made with corn. It smells good though. Haven't tried it yet.

  4. We have tried millet bread, GFP fav. sandwich bread mix, whole foods fresh baked bread and EnerG tapioca bread. The millet bread and the EnerG tap. bread toast nice but I didn't like the millet bread much as it can be a bit grainy. The GFP sandwich bread mix made a great cinn. bread but I didn't care for it as a sandwhich bread as it was really heavy. Same with the WF bread. I put that on toast 3 times and it never toasted!!! LOL! And it kinda gets soggy. SO I think if I had to pick I would do the EnerG tapioca bread and the GFP mix for the cinn. bread (which was really good)

    Oh and we freeze too.

  5. Well actually I find prices to be about the same. Only thing is that I have to travel here and there to get things and with the price of gas...well it probably equals out to be about the same. No store in my area carries all the things I like. BUT I can find most things in one place online. So if you look at the $8-10 for S&H as gas money....you make out better. Well I do anyway! AND it depends on the site you are looking at. Like I just checked GFP's sales today and their SALE price is more than shopbydiet's regular price! You need to find one or two sites you like and keep an eye out for sales!

I tend to do most here.....

    Open Original Shared Link

....As they carry a lot of brands I want. BTW they aren't all listed in the shop by brand name drop down so if you are looking for something put it in search.

  6. I am going to go crazy!! I noticed it wasn't on the gluten-free list I had so I looked up online. Some say yes and some say no. Some depends on if it is pill, tablet or liquid. So I called the pharmacy. They say "I believe it is gluten-free. Doesn't look like there is anything in it" Ok...that was reassuring! So I call the dr and they tell me to call the pharmacy. I said "I did and they told me to call you!" So they have to research it and come back and tell me they don't "think' so. SO now I am coming to the real experts....

LADIES AND GENTELMEN....DOES OR DOES NOT ZITHROMAX ORAL SUSPENSION HAVE ANY KIND OF GLUTEN IN IT??? Can I give it to my daughter??

  7. I know this subject came up on the board and saw this. Thought you might find it interesting since you all were talking about it.. I find it sad.

A First Communion dream in doubt

By Kathleen Burge, Globe Staff | April 12, 2006

The white dress from Sears is hanging in her closet, near the long veil and the matching purse. She has practiced cupping her hands together to receive the wafer from the priest. And she chatters with excitement about the party to be held in her honor afterward.

But as Victoria Coyne, 7, prepares for her first Holy Communion, there has been a major snag: As a child suffering from both celiac disease and diabetes, she can neither eat the wheat wafer that represents the body of Christ nor drink the wine that signifies his blood.

''I already got the stuff ready," said Victoria, who hopes to make her First Communion in June at St. Marguerite D'Youville Church in Dracut. ''My mom is trying to talk to the priest, and so is my dad."

Her parents thought they found a solution in a rice Communion wafer -- free of gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains that makes her ill -- but official church policy forbids its use. The ritual of Communion is tied to the Last Supper, when Jesus is believed to have eaten wheat bread and drunk grape wine with his disciples. Canon law requires that both wheat and grapes be part of the Communion service. Worshippers who receive Communion consume at least one: Children usually eat only the wafer, and adult Catholics sometimes receive both wafer and wine.

Church officials have grappled repeatedly in recent years with the collision between longstanding church teachings and modern medicine. In his previous job leading the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Pope Benedict XVI addressed the issue of worshippers suffering from celiac disease and alcoholism, allowing for the substitution of low-gluten wafers and a slightly fermented grape juice.

Officials in the Boston Archdiocese say they have seen more than 40 cases in the past year and a half in which people with celiac disease and other illnesses cannot eat the traditional Communion wafers. Each case was resolved, usually with low-gluten wafers, said Kevin Shea, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston.

About 1 out of 133 people suffers from celiac disease, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. For those with the disease, which is genetic, ingesting gluten damages the small intestine, impairing the ability to absorb nutrients from food. If the disease goes untreated, it can cause other conditions, including anemia and osteoporosis.

Some of the conflicts have been bruising. In 2001, the Boston Archdiocese told the family of a 5-year-old girl with celiac disease that when she took her First Communion, she could not substitute rice wafers for traditional communion wafers. Her family left the church and began practicing as Methodists.

In New Jersey, a bishop declared invalid the First Communion of a girl with celiac disease who took rice wafers instead of those containing gluten. Her mother unsuccessfully petitioned the Vatican to reverse the decision.

Victoria's multiple health issues complicate her case. Her body cannot tolerate even the low-gluten wafers, her mother said. The solution for Victoria may lie in a low-alcohol grape juice, often offered to priests who are alcoholics; her parents are investigating whether it is safe for their daughter.

Although the Coynes are grateful for the support of their priest, the Rev. Paul Clifford, they are discouraged by the church's rules on Communion, which they believe are overly rigid.

''Right now we're frustrated, because it just doesn't seem right that she would be expected to ingest something that would be harmful to her body in order to make her First Communion," said Stephanie Coyne, Victoria's mother. ''She's sad. She's been at Sunday school for two years, practicing what she needs to do to make her First Communion."

Shea, the archdiocesan spokesman, said Clifford was determined to find a solution. He offered to hold a special First Communion service for Victoria and her friends if she felt self-conscious about drinking the grape juice rather than taking a wafer, Shea said.

''They're going to find a way for that First Communion," he said. ''There's no question about that."

  8. Thanks!! I'll give her a copy of those tests. I have no idea what exactly she had done on the test as my girl friend wasn't certain. I told her to just try a gluten-free diet. She says she won't unless there is cause. You know....too much work! We have heard that all before. I told her it certainly can't hurt. I did suggest the food diary. I do that with my children and it really helps.

I also explained that it could be an intollerace and that wouldn't show on a Celiac panel but have similar symptoms. I gave my girl friend this site and told her to check out the info on here so hopefully she might find something that will help.

I will also mention those that you mentioned Laura. I didn't think about Crohn's and somewhere I have info on that. You made a good point .....

The other thing---that sticks out to me---is if it is (and I certainly don't know!) a gluten-related problem, eating almost anything might cause digestive distress, even if the food is gluten free. She could be so damaged that her body can't process anything correctly, ya know? It is hard to tell because I know that I personally want to diagnose everyone with Celiac ... but obviously, everyone with complaints does not have Celiac. But, on the otherhand, this disease is way under-diagnosed. So go figure.

It is hard to say without all the info but I honestly think she needs further tests and another opinion. She is going for another opinion so maybe this dr. will take it further. We deal with allergies in my house but a swollen stomach is not one of those symptoms. And the fact that her bio. daughter is having the exact same problems and throws up after eating and has IBS.....That leads me to believe Celiac. That would be just too much of a small world for them both to have the exact same allergy and have the exact same problems. KWIM?

Here is a question...IF she went gluten-free how long do you think she would start feeling better after starting it? It that something to happen fast or would it take a long time??

And another.....When she went for the Celiac panel would she not have to overload on gluten for it? Or would a piece of bread here or a piece of toast in the morning, for example, work? I question if she took the test properly.

  9. I know the answer to this but I wanted to see what you all thought....

My girl friend mother has been very sick for years. She often throws up after eating and has GI problems including consitpation and diarrhea. Her stomach is very swollen and she also has other problems like headaches and joint problems. She just had surgery for adhesions (sp) of unknown causes. She has had MRIs and x-rays. Scopes up and scopes down although I am not certain what they were looking for. They did a blood panel for Celiac on her and it was neg. My girl friend doesnt' know if they did a gene test. I mentioned how many on here have had neg. results. Her daughter also throws up after eating and has been diagnosed with IBS. I know....I know.....BUT do you think it could be something else? Another medical problem or maybe an allergy to something she is eating. Would an allergy cause the swollen belly?

Here is a sample of food she ate and then threw up....

    grilled chicken

    broccoli

    sweet pot.

I asked if she had any bread, seasonings, etc and she (my gluten-free) wasn't 100%. Just said it was soaked in italian dressing and grilled. That however doesnt' tell me what she ate all day prior too or how the meal was cooked.

So my 1st question is: Could it be something BESIDES Celiac and what should we look for?

#2: Please explain how the tests can be wrong so that I can better explain it to her.

#3 What could have been used on that meal above that might have made her sick?? (assuming that was all she ate)

BTW My girl friend doesn't have any problems but she is adopted.

  10. Maybe the teachers at your church can read a story about children who are all different and then talk about what makes each child in class different. (The library has some wonderful books for something like this.) Openly pointing out your DD's Celiac and what that means. She can basicly explain it like an allergy so the young children would better understand. Often children respond that way simply because they don't know. They are probably picking up on the fact your DD is "different". Perhaps pointing out what makes her (and the others) special will help the children understand better and be more accepting. Then offer to bring in some safe snacks to share with her friends so they see her food isn't so different. Since it is church you can point out that Jesus loved everyone no matter who they were or what made them "special". Just some thoughts. 4yr olds are pretty much open minded about things like this.

It is wonderful about the changes in the church. It will make her life so much happier.

  11. It just seems I keep coming up to walls. I tried to get my husbands and my GP to give us a gene test. Nope....he doesn't know the referral numbers and wants to send us to a GI. <_< All I want is the gene test. You go behind your nurses desk, open the big book from my insurance co and look up Celiac and get the number. I don't work in an office there but I have done enough referrals to know how it works. Well that is just too hard to do. So I figured that the allergist, who up to yesterday was pretty sure this was where we were headed, would refer us and we would go that route. Nope. Another wall. Man he turned around so fast my head is still spinning! HTH! How do you sit and talk with me about Celiac/intollerance and now figure she is all just fine and Jim Dandy? Because she ate wheat in your office and didn't go into ana. shock? Come on! He knows the details. And here is little Missy walking round with her wheat cracker smiling like the world is just grand. *sigh* Maybe I am just going nuts. So far she hasnt' had any reactions. I keep waiting for it to come but nothing so far. Who knows...maybe it was an allergy and she outgrew it. Just seems rather fast and odd. Two months is not that long. I take her off and put her on a gluten-free diet and everything clears forever? Wow! Wish I had known that months ago! I am just sooooooooooo frustrated I wanna sit and cry. :(

I would rather keep her on this diet then to have everything come flying back and I am right back to where I started. She is young. She doesn't know the difference.

  12. *sigh* I am just going to bang my head against a wall as it seems that is the only thing that will listen to me!!

Here is our current standing. Just a reminder...we have been on a wheat free diet for two months. It turned out to be a gluten free as she was also having reactions to oats and we think Barley. She was having diarrhea and diaper rashes for 5 months with some eczema and hives. Since the diet she has been doing GREAT!!! I have been to the allergist, who is currently handeling Delaneys case, several times over this period. We have been debaiting if it is an allergy (which she doesn't show up on any test with) or Celiac. He says he wants to rule out a wheat allergy with a food challenge. We go yesterday for this challenge. I know it will be a waste of time cause I know she will not be having immed. reactions. They will be GI delayed reactions. We spend ALL day there. She eats some wheat items. Nothing. No hives. No eyes rolling back in the head. No breathing problems. Nothing. Now at the last visit he told me that if she should pass this wheat challenge she will be sent to a GI for further testing to look into Celiac/gluten intollerance. Yesterday he tells me after the day is done that he now wants her to be on a wheat diet (which BTW I have NOTHING to feed her here with wheat!!!) for a week and then do a stool sample. If the stool sample turns out that there is no blood then she is a pass. So I mention the GI and Celiac, etc and he tells me that it isn't a worry!!! I mention the oats and he tells me to go ahead and give them to her! When I mention the diarrhea he tells me it might have just been toddler diarrhea (what the heck is that!?) or a tummy bug. FOR 5 MONTHS????? And only when she started on grains!!!! Is this the same man I have been dealing with for two months??? Was it not him that sat in the room last month and told me he was concerned that this was in fact where we were likely to head??? I agreed to the wheat challenge to finally rule out an allergy. Done. Now I have to put her on wheat for a week? Then what? IF there is no blood in her stool she is announced perfect and mom is just a nut?? Come on! I was not the only one that had to change her diapers and hear her scream from the rashes. It wasn't a bug that lasted for 5 months! It started the day I gave her crackers and cookies. It went away when the grains went away. And now she is ok and we are going to do nothing?! I am beginning to think I am the one that is crazy! I am a bit mad and frustrated and feel like I am back to square one! Why is it that we have been talking an intollerance and now she is ok!? Is it honestly the end of the world to go to a GI and have her checked out there? I know he wasn't too happy about her having Celiac but isn't it better to know than to pretend it is all ok?? I just don't understand this change in direction! So now we are at yet another stand still (when I thought this was going to be finally a beginning to an end) and we wait now to see if she gets her GI reactions back. *sigh* I think I am going to take up drinking! <_<

*breath in breath out* Ok....now I feel better! :D

  13. I get that too from my family! My parents think an allergy is just a really long cold and the Celiac is something I made up and who can have an intollerance cause after all "all that kind of food is good for you and so how could it be bad for you?" The best part....."drink more water and don't eat late at night...that is the whole problem" LOL! I still say I'm the boss and if you don't get it that is your problem. Just shut up and follow the rules! :D LOL!

  14. Why are you worring about what people think? I agree...the only one you have to worry about it your son and working with the drs. I dont' even mention Celiac or Gluten Intollerance to outside people. They wouldn't understand. I tell them she is allergic to wheat/barley/oats, etc. They understand that and don't need to know much more than that unless I feel they need too. And I don't care what they think. I tell teachers/church/sitters/family/etc not to give her anything unless it is provided by me as she is "allergic" and to make sure (due to her age) that she never picks up anything and puts it in her mouth and that is all they need to know.

Are you worring because you have told everyone about it might be Celiac and it isnt and they might think you are crazy now!? LOL! I think that too ;) since we don't have an "offical" diagnosis. You wouldn't be alone. I still dont' care. In the end...I am the mother and what I say goes. I know something isn't right and that is all anyone needs to know. ((((((hugs))))))) Hang in there. You WILL find an answer. You AREN'T crazy. It might take some time and regrouping but it will come. And no cheating to see if you are right!!! I know where your thinking is coming from. In the end it is best to just continue on the gluten-free diet till you find some answers.

  15. My GI said you cannot have it if you do not carry the gene. IMO you need to take a breath and regroup. It isn't Celiac. That is a good thing! An awesome thing!! So now focus on what it is or could be. Look into the intollerance. The symptoms are the same. The diet is the same. So if he is reacting good to the diet it is possible and likely. Talk with your dr about looking for an intollerance to gluten. And try ruling out allergy (which sounds like it might not be that but rule it out all the same). Just because he isn't Celiac but responds to the diet doesn't mean you are crazy. One step at a time. That is all we can do. I have wanted to do the same thing....give my daughter bread or something just to prove I am not nuts. But I KNOW she reacts and so I wouldn't be doing any justice to her by doing it. Hang in there.

    ((((hug)))))

  16. Thanks! I'll try it again....with EGG!!! :D It was still good. I just would have liked the breading to be ON the chicken rather than me picking it out of the pan!!! LOL! I am not sure how my husband turned them. Maybe that was the problem. The tops that baked 1st had it on there but the bottom was stuck to the pan. Maybe he didn't use a turner of some sort.

    Ahhhh...my goal for this week!
