  1. As you can see from some people's signatures, it is possible. But you should also check, after your body has had time to heal, if you can then tolerate more foods than you can now. Because some things are just hard to digest when your system is down, but once it's running more smoothly they won't present a problem.
  2. Hmmm...positive blood tests plus symptoms says stay away from gluten to me! Your intestine just might not be so grievously damaged yet that their biopsies picked up damaged spots. As for the tablespoon of flour, people's sensitivity varies a lot. Not having an immediate symptom doesn't mean it isn't doing damage, though. You just can't be sure. When...
  3. I've read a lot of things linking celiac and depression. Maybe quickest and easiest, Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic by Dr. Peter Green and Rory Jones has a checklist to help figure out if you should be tested. There are 3 categories, and one includes "psychiatric disorders or depression." So if you've had that plus any of the things in either of the...
  4. They make calcium supplements that are flavored chews that really taste like candy. Always better if you can get a nutrient through actual foods, but it's worth knowing about anyway.
  5. After reading all the comments in this thread at once, this is my take: The medical verdict is not yet in on soy. It seems to benefit some conditions and worsen others. It shouldn't be, as ekatherine said, treated as "something between a natural medicine and a miracle food that we should make the majority of our diet." But neither should we become hysterical...
  6. I don't make regular bread, and the bread I buy is the Glutino flax seed bread - so it has a decent amount of fiber at least. Similarly, I try to keep in my freezer things like homemade pumpkin bread, where the pumpkin has some fiber and a ton of vitamin A and good bit of potassium, plus I include things like walnuts and dried cranberries. Or the bran flax...
  7. On the subject of Rice Dream, I quote from a letter to Gluten-Free Living magazine and their response to it: And the response from the article's author: Take-away message: Sounds like it's ok to have some Rice Dream if you want.
  8. This saves time as well as money: A couple times a year I make a huge pot of vegetarian chili. All the ingredients are maybe $15. I freeze it in serving-size containers, and then whenever I want a low-effort, healthy meal, I pull one out. Sometimes I make cornbread to go with it, sometimes I serve it over a handful of penne (my favorite brand is Trader...
  9. Cape Cod brand reduced fat potato chips. I love those things, don't know why. Cool Ranch Doritos (not potato chips, but anyway).
  10. It seems like everyone's adjustment period is different while their bodies heal. So the best thing to do may be to at least temporarily go to a really simple diet, and then after a little while add some things back in. But it may also not be really related to anything you're currently eating, just to your body refusing to let bygones be bygones. Hopefully...
  11. The white/wheat thing is always the classic. It really goes to show how little people know about what goes into the food they eat. I think my best in that category was when I asked about a dish described as having asian noodles. Thinking it was somewhat possible they'd be rice noodles, I asked if they had any wheat in them. Waiter goes off to check...
  12. Some Fantastic Foods dehydrated foods are gluten-free, and clearly marked. Also, a friend sent me this recipe that I keep meaning to make: 3 ounces puffed brown rice, approximately 6 cups 3 tablespoons flax seed oil, plus extra for the pan 1 tablespoon orange blossom honey 7 ounces mini marshmallows, approximately 4 cups 3 ounces toasted slivered...
  13. It doesn't sound like any reaction to gluten I've ever heard of (though that doesn't mean someone hasn't had it). Also, I know people who know they've been glutened fast, but not usually while they're still eating (unless it was a long meal I guess). But sounds more like some kind of unfortunate flu. Typically food poisoning doesn't involve fever.
  14. From very shortly after they brought me home from the hospital, I took a long time to fall asleep but once asleep slept through the night. As I've gotten older, I've figured out that my body clock just wants me up at night and asleep until mid-day, and that if I go to sleep very very late, I fall asleep relatively quickly (for me anyway) and am generally...
  15. So to sum up this thread so far, people have had trouble with the following brands: Amy's Bob's Red Mill Pamela's Hormel's Van's Waffles Utz Chips Barbara's Puffins Cereal Some Whole Foods 365 Brand Blue Diamond Nut Thins Lays Quakers Arrowhead Mills Kinnikinnick products Mi Del cookies Another mix - big brown bag [My note: sounds like...
  16. Don't know about that brand, but the Trader Joe's ones are. Or were last time I bought them - they were, then they weren't (or were at least suspicious, but were still on the gluten-free foods list at the stores and I talked to an assistant manager about it one time) and then they were again. So you have to keep reading ingredients, but if you get bad news...

    ARCHIVED Risotteria

You can also take the A C or E from Penn Station to West 4th Street. Risotteria is 270 Bleecker Street, at Cornelia Street I think.
  18. Good to know they're working on it...maybe soon.
  19. Is having celiac a blessing? Probably not. But being diagnosed with it definitely is. Especially since it sounds like your eating habits won't be as hard to adapt as some people's would. One thing to be sure of is that you don't overthink the diet. If you look at it, a large part of the things you already eat will be fine with only small adjustments...
  20. Alas - went by the Upper West Side Crumbs yesterday and they denied knowledge of gluten-free cupcakes.
  21. If there's a Trader Joe's anywhere near you, look there. They have a multi-page list of all the gluten-free products they carry, which includes some energy bars and the Thai Kitchen bowls other people have mentioned as well as some microwavable indian meals that aren't frozen, and some indian and other meals that are frozen. They also carry chocolate,...
  22. I guess my experience was kind of the opposite of yours. I wasn't looking for a diagnosis - I just thought it was bad luck that I'd been hospitalized twice in 2.5 years with violent GI issues, and my doctor tells me to stop eating wheat, barley, and rye!?! I didn't believe her, to be honest, because I didn't believe I was sick. So my first couple of weeks...
  23. Going to the city to gorge myself on gluten-free foods tomorrow, and I'll give it a try and report back. Gosh, I hope I have a good report!
  24. It's definitely not squishy white bread, but I really like Glutino flax seed bread. Toasted, it really holds together enough to do a sandwich, which is so convenient. And I like the nutty taste from the flax. I haven't tried their other breads, in part because I looked at the nutrition information for their fiber bread and it had significantly more calories...

    ARCHIVED Risotteria

That happened to me, too! I actually asked for the salt for my salad, and then shortly after my pizza arrived the waiter asked for the shaker back! It's like, people! Salt is a flavor enhancer! In salad, it brings out the tanginess of the dressing. In pizza it brings out a range of flavors. In desserts it brings out sweetness and other subtle flavors...
