ARCHIVED Breast Implants And Celiac Disease

N=2, and if you count the ones I haven't lived with there's much, much more experience. I'm stuck in uber yuppieville and everyone thinks veggie is "trendy" here. -
After trying to be nice, you need to draw the line. My mother b%$@#es about how bad she feels, but REFUSES to try going gluten free for even 2 weeks! I just don't listen anymore. Everytime she starts complaining, I ask if she's tried going gluten-free. She'll say something about how hard it is, I'll say that it's so worth it, and that ends it. I left...

ARCHIVED Getting Pregnant With So Many Health Issues?

Carla, your experience sounds similar to what I've heard. One family I knew had I think 2 kids of their own, then decided to try an adoption. After the first adoption they ended up adopting 2 more, even though they could have had kids. Too bad it seems to be a best kept secret. -

A total higher than average means 1/2. Do we need to review fractions? Most people think they are above average, so that would only discourage about 10% of the population I understand genetics enough to know that I don't want to spread mine (I was encouraged to become a geneticist by one of my professors, but I didn't bother since people don... -

They usually bathe, drive SUVs while using cell phone and drinking their organic latte, think I'm inferior for eating meat and non-organic produce (I promise, every vegetarian roommate I have had has shown signs of mental illness), ONLY shop at the health food store, but when asked don't know the difference between slippery elm and guar gum (they just take... -

My family member's adoption was near flawless. The mother decided later that she wanted the child back (probably once she found out about welfare and that she could be deported) but had signed the papers so there was nothing she could do. There was never fear of giving the child back, just having to deal with court mess. I have other family members that... -

Are you seriously that sensitive? You didn't hurt my feelings, takes much more than that. Sorry to disappoint you. -

Ah, the royal "we" If you think that I need to start sugar coating and p%$#@# footing then say so. I have a low BS and "filler" tolerance. I've heard lots of it in my life from all directions (patients, doctors, supplement companies, "advocacy" sites, you name it) especially since I now live in a town full of hippie wanna bes. -

You need to start thinking about relative risk . I'm more likely to get killed on my bicycle than by big boobs. Heck, the bacteria on unwashed organic veggies can be pretty dangerous (yes, this has been confirmed by a microbiologist/immunologist, it's a classic intro micro lab). Once I get the track out of my system I'll probably get a pair (and a... -
If you don't mine me asking, how'd you get diagnosed? I'm tired of the generic vicodin and BC fix all from my gyno (I've had bad side effects from everything I've tried: cramping, continual spotting, and even heart palps). I really believe the retrograde flow with immune involvement theory is the most plausible, but finding someone that would be willing...

Mastectomy patients are COMPLETELY different than normal patients. If you've ever talked with a cancer surgeon (I have) you'll know that using their complication rates is complete BS scare tactics for the rest of the population. Cancer patients are exceptionally difficult to operate on. The implants are manufactured in a sterile and exceptionally dust... -

So if the government thinks you aren't good enough to have kids, then make your own I have family that has adopted without a problem, and a cousin that probabyl would have put a child up for adoption if it was more common. I don't think that everyone should stop having kids, just those that have an above average risk of health problems. There's no... -

If you were already set on spawning, you might as well have said that in the first post. Ehrin, glad to see that I'm not the only logical one on here. It requires a careful risk/benefit analysis, that I've realizing most people are not capable of. There's much healthier kids in foster care and oprhanages than anything I could spawn, so why bother? -

Ursula, you do realize that silicone implants are not available in the US, don't you (except for reconstruction)? The current implants are a bag of saline. That's right, IV solution. THere's a new mammogram procedure being tested in Canada that doesn't use any pressure, so that won't be a concern for long. Most everything else can be avoided by going... -

Ugh. I always tell them (even when I'm going in for a filling) that I'm hard to anesthetize and will take more than they think I should. It's also hard to get Drs to take me seriously when I complain of any pain because I don't take motrin. It takes about 1.5 to 2x the max suggested dose to do anything worth taking a pill for, and at that point I start... -

Make sure your surgeon has a low infection rate, and ask if you can get a small sample of the implant material. After taking a shower, tape it to your skin overnight or for a few days in a sensitive spot. If there's a reaction it will definitely be a problem, but if there's not a reaction there shouldn't be a major short term reaction. I refuse to... -

Yeah, I am one of those people that require an exceptional amount of anesthesia (my body processes it quickly obviously). I could definitely see that happening to me. -

But they still have the genes, and you can't protect them from stress forever. Sooner or later, they will be stressed and if they have the genes an autoimune disease will pop up. It's also possible that your husband has exceptionally good genes in this regard, so you won't see the bad ones pop up until there are grand kids and they start getting sick. ... -

You obviously haven't taken any biostatistics! They can calculate anything They can calculate an average risk. You can try to lower your risk, but it's so difficult that the stress would make up for any positive dietary and environmental changes. I think that a large cross correlation study that covered most autoimmune diseases would be extremely... -

I refuse to make my problem someone else's (a.k.a. demand that I pick the place) but it does sound like trying to pick ahead of time can't hurt. When out on the motorcycle the whole point is to find some empty twisty roads in the middle of nowhere, so I'm just going to bring my own food rather than risk problems (drowsiness is not good at 60mph, trust... -

Ursula, you are talking about emotional and not genetic issues. Apples and oranges. Behavior can be changed, but genes can't. In addition, I feel that it's impossible to avoid environmental triggers of autoimmune diseases without giving a kid some serious issues. No processed food, minimal chemicals, you'd have to raise a kid in a bubble and never let... -
ARCHIVED Getting Pregnant With So Many Health Issues?

The thing is, when doctors calculate risk they do so based on just one disease. With immune problems, they present with different diseases in every individual, so the genetic risk is greatly undercalculated. For example, no one in my family has been diagnosed with celiac, but it wasn't a big surprise to me because it's an immune disorder. family members... -

I gotta disagree with this one. If you've grown up with a parent with a chronic illness, you know it will affect your kid's quality of life as well. At an early age they have to learn that their mom can't do what others can. With celiac it's simple stuff like choosing a funky tasting birthday cake or leaving mom out, but whith thyroid problems it's hard... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Tell Others When Eating Out?
cultureslayer posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Since there's not enough hours in the day, it's common to discuss projects over lunch. Since my doctor won't say: Yes, you definitely have celiac (positive IgG AGA but the rest were negative), I haven't really told anyone unless asked. So when you're eating out with someone that doesn't know you have celiac, do you warn them a few days ahead of time (so...
