ARCHIVED Getting Pregnant With So Many Health Issues?
cultureslayer replied to Green12's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Autoimmune diseases have a genetic component, as we all know. If you want to risk passing that on is up to you. My grandmother has rheumatiod arthritis, and of her 3 daughters there's schizophrenia, severe depression/endometriosis, and graves/RA (my mom). I've got hashimoto's, celiac, and possibly PCOS or endometriosis (no one really knows what's wrong... -
ARCHIVED Finding Money For Endoscopy Test
cultureslayer replied to oaktownboy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IF it's just to confirm the diagnosis, I've skipped it. I work in a medical field and I don't trust doctors. They give me enough crap when I'm awake, no way they are putting me under for anything less than major surgery. -
ARCHIVED For You Law Savvy People Out There
cultureslayer replied to NicoleAJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been denied housing because of it. No joke, and this happened a few days after I was diagnosed. I was paying for a room from the 1st of May and arriving on the 12th late at night and the jerk that ran the place wanted me to spend a night in a hostel and check in the next day. I called and sent her an email stating that with chronic fatigue and my... -
ARCHIVED "normal" People Just Don't Know How Good They Have It!
cultureslayer replied to cgilsing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hahaha, my mother made us all give up nightshade vegetables for a while when I was a kid since she wanted to try an arthritis diet. It worked and she slowly realized she'd have to allow it back in the house (as a kid you have to have pizza). But when I told her I had celiac her reaction was "couldn't you just give up bread and get better a little slower... -

That stinks! I didn't know Thyrolar used dyes either. -

Try to get out of the meal plan. Even the people I knew with no allergies were inventing strange gastro symptoms and going to student health to try to get out of the meal plan, but it might be better where you are. They also put in a crapload of spicecs to cover up the warmed for hours and straight from the freezer taste, so if you have a generally sensitive... -
Armour is dirt cheap (well, almost). I pay about $10 a month with drugstore.com, but keep in mind that I'm taking about the equivalent of 175mcg Synthroid a day. Armour costs about 1/3 to 1/4 what synthroid does for a roughly equivalent dose. If your switching to armour from synthroid you might want to go 1/2 and 1/2 for the first month or so and...

ARCHIVED Feeling Faithless

Thyrolar is available by special order at pretty much any pharmacy. IT's the same T4/T3 combo as armour, only it's completely synthetic. It doesn't really have to be refridgerated 24/7 (you can keep it in your purse for a week, so most just take a week's worth out at a time), but most online pharmacies will jack up the price with shipping it on ice, so... -
I have wondered if I should take a year off of grad school before I tried going gluten free. I couldn't even get all my class work done, much less anything in the lab. I think I'm slowly improving now, but I hope the proper mental functioning will return (I felt like I must have dropped at least 40 IQ points during the worst of it). I hate having problems...

There's a triangle group as well, but I missed the last meeting due to transportation issues. -
ARCHIVED Fluffiest gluten-free Quick Bread?
cultureslayer posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm going to be stuck away from a bread machine for 3 months, so I'd like to find a quick bread recipe. So far I've tried 3 recipes. 2 were rock hard, and the other one was decent (buckwheat and rice). Finding a gooey quick bread recipe shouldn't be hard, so I need help finding a fluffy one. Thanks! FYI: quickbreads are those without yeast. ... -
ARCHIVED Sleep Too Much Prior To Diagnosis Of Celiac
cultureslayer replied to ktneal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Try some Armour thyroid (or other T3 source if you are a veggie). It's done great things for me. Might not work for you. but it's at least worth a try. Levoxyl migh as well be a placebo to me. I need large amounts of T3. I've been tired all week and found out that my protein powder has gluten in it. The replacement I ordered also has gluten, despite... -

If you want to do an elimination diet, California Natural is absolutely the way to go. Avoderm is a good sensitive stomach food, followed by sensible choice. Nutro NAtural is better than most, but you can do a lot better too. I found a combo of home cooked ground turkey (70 cents a lb at aldi), rice, Cal. Natural, and some raw to be the best combo of convenience... -

Prebiotics are more or less fertilizer for the good bacteria in your gut . The one that I've used has been fructo-oligo-sacchrides (sp) or FOS for short. I eat yogurt, but that's only 1 or 2 types of bacteria so I need to quit being lazy and get a supplement. -

Auster was a German shepherd. She was a mix of mostly W. German showlines and some pre-split Shiloh. I'll never own another showlines dog again. After seeing the difference between the working lines and mixed breeds, I am never going back to show. You average shelter dog is far healthier and more stable. I still loved her though. She responded really... -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?

You'd think that my grandmother dying or my aunt being thrown in the looney bin might have bothered me, but as long as I had Auster she was all I needed. It was definitely an intolerance, since she was okay with gravy mix that had been thinned down a lot with corn starch, but she had multiple immune issues (autoimmune scarring of the cornea and a bladder... -

Have you tried Armour thyroid? If you are hypo then some T3 might help. There's also cytomel and thyrolar (a synthetic version of Armour) if you are concerned about the pork origin of armour. It helped me, and every little bit helps when you are in grad school. One thing I haven't done yet is get a B complex, probiotic, and prebiotic supplements to... -

Sorry, I want to be the "other" kind of "doctor." You know, the one that gets to lock themself in a lab and be all asocial and everyone just thinks that's normal? I'm too outspoken and interested in alternative medicine to make it through med school without getting kicked out. Just never been a good follower (although I can make an exception for... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Faithless
cultureslayer replied to lushgreen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have a medical family, then you know that doctors are stupid anyway. If it's really that important to them, just scan your test results and do a little photoshopping. Numbers and normal ranges are only guidelines, not rules. 5% of the population have a "normal" that's not "normal" and many people can have a "normal" test result without really... -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
cultureslayer replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
The frustrating thing is that I'm a grad student... at the UNC medical school! If anyone should be able to find "the" doctor I should. When I made an appointment with an endo they gave me a diabetes doc because "he's the only one that sees thyroid patients" and I got so mad I cancelled my appointment which I had waited... -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?

There is only one solution. *I* must become famous so that I can support autoimmune disease awareness (sorry, but they seem to come as a package deal anyways so might as well make awareness the same). I've never understood why there aren't doctors that specialize in the treatment of autoimmune diseases instead of sending patients to a range of specialists... -
T3 has a ~24 hour half life. So if you take it once a day you get a large variation in your metabolism throughout the day, which may or may not contribute to weight problems. The pills are VERY easy to break in half. I currently take 1 grain in the morning and 3/4 a pill at night to get 105mg. I can quarter it by hand, but if I'm at home I'll use the...

How long did you try Armour and how often were you taking it? Armour MUST be taken twice a day (or more) but most doctors don't realize that. Usually in the AM and mid afternoon. Changes should also be made gradually (for example, 1/4 Armour for a week, then 1/2, etc.). Most people prefer 1/2 Armour and 1/2 Levoxyl instead of either one straight as well...

Another thing to keep in mind is that t3 is absorbed more easily than T4, so if you're having absorbtion problems then you might want to try Armour or injections and see if it makes a difference. My mother is chronically undermedicated (synthroid only). I have far less of my thyroid that she does if you go by medication dose, but I feel a whole lot better...

ARCHIVED Iron-tek Essential Protein Warning
cultureslayer posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Iron-Tek states on their website and the side of the package that all flavors of their essential protein are gluten free. The cookies and cream flavor contains COOKIES that are made with wheat flour. The wheat flour is on the ingredient list right beside the gluten free statement! I couldn't find an ingredient list online anywhere, just the gluten-free...
