ARCHIVED Neurological Benefits Of Magnesium
jlinc replied to jlinc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I take two 400Mg caplets from Now (cheapy brand, I know). Also take 500Mg as a component of a large multi mineral called Max-A-Min, which I got from the now-defunct Wild Oats stores. It doesn't go bad, but when I'm done with it I'll need to find a new source. -
ARCHIVED Neurological Benefits Of Magnesium
jlinc posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I've struggled with depression since at least middle school, about age 12. Sometimes it was better, sometimes worse. I always wondered what was wrong, why I couldn't think well of myself, always thought I was less than everyone else. I was bright and got good grades, but couldn't track things well. I was always the odd one out. Fast forward to about... -
On thinking more about this, I realized that I've been off magnesium supplements for about 2 months. During that time I've begun to have problems with hyperacusis, tinnitus, etc. In blood tests, I've had low readings in D3 and other vitamins, but don't think I've been tested for magnesium. Magnesium is part of a three-vitamin cocktail that researchers...

This is a fascinating thread. I was born with about 50% hearing loss and I wear a hearing aid. I've since had problems with tinnitus as well as hyperacusis (sensitivity to noise which gets worse with exposure to more loud noise). I'm sometimes tempted to attribute every physical ailment I have to my celiac disease, but I don't want to get paranoid ...

ARCHIVED Serious Anxiety....which Seems To Affect Everything!
jlinc replied to givenupgluten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi givenupgluten, Many of your anxieties remind me of my own. When I'm glutened, I experience severe anxiety about 48 hours later. It lasts for about 24 hours, and during that time it is almost impossible for me to think well of myself. (My thinking goes, "Must think positive... everything's crap... must think positive... everything's..." all day long... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Waffle Mix
jlinc posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We just tried Trader Joe's (new?) waffle mix this weekend. I'd never seen it in the store before. We usually use Cravings Place, which is delicious, if a bit heavy. Well, TJ's new mix was half the price and WAY lighter. And it's a big bag... Great stuff. I recommend it highly. -
I always get so uncomfortable when people go out of their way to accomodate me, but it sure feels good, doesn't it?!

ARCHIVED Oh My God I Feel So Bad, Stress, Sad, Angry, Etc
jlinc replied to dogle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi dogle, I suffered from the psychological effects of celiac disease, and some of the things you say sound very familiar to me. I can still get depressed if I happen to be glutened (I usually feel it around 36-48 hours after being glutened, and it lasts about 24 hours). When I'm in the middle of it, there's little I can do to feel better. But if you can... -
Hi Trev, Welcome, welcome! If I have a problem with my condition, I'll often come here before I go to my Dr. (I know, it's not what the AMA would advise!) but I've learned much of what I needed to know by hearing other people's stories here. Lots of great support! See you around the board! Josh.

Hi, I think there have been some very negative things said about doctors, and I can't agree with painting them all with the same brush. Brian, your doctor seems to have some personal frustrations that are emerging in his practice, and they may be getting in the way of doing good medicine. My GP is kind of clueless about celiac, but he listens and...

ARCHIVED It's Feeling Better The Best Way To Go?
jlinc replied to alissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree. I think that modeling good behavior is the only way to teach. If I take care of myself, people in my family are more likely to, as well. I've found that's been true for several people I'm close to. I don't like to "educate" people unless they ask me. Sometimes I feel compelled to say something, like to my parents about my mom's persistent... -
Hm, well, I have a tendency to overeat emotionally, too. In fact, I don't know if it's just OCD in general, or if it's related to never getting enough from the food I ate when I was young, but I'm capable of overeating anything. Mostly, though it's sugary stuff that is gluten-free. (sidenote: I just learned M&M's are gluten-free! Why on earth would...

Hi, Has someone out there has had experience with a celiac specialist in Portland? I think there must be someone good up at OHSU, but given some of my previous experiences, I would like to get a referral before I plunk down my (all my?) money. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much! Josh.

Great topic! I was just thinking I need to find a new doc, because of recurring kidney pain. Does anyone have a suggestion for Portland, OR? Thanks for any help you can give. Josh.

jlinc replied to blracing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Great! I'm so glad you're feeling better. i just saw your thread here, and I wish you all the best. Please let us know any further developments! Josh. -
Hi Ursula, I could never give advice to anyone regarding their family because I'm not there, I don't know what's going on, I'm not you. However, I can say that in my recovery from this celiac disease I've found that focusing on myself and what I need to be healthy has made all the difference. I try to have options, other ways to deal with difficult...

ARCHIVED What Does A Bad Day Feel Like?
jlinc replied to Cornhusker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Cornhusker, I agree with JennFog: I don't have bad days unless I've been glutened. I would download the food lists and pay particular attention to the food additives (like dexTROSE vs. dexTRIN). Print the lists out and put them on the refrigerator, keep a copy in the car for when you (or someone else) goes to the grocery store. Make sure your... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Putting A Strain On Marriage And Life
jlinc replied to tsomo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
GFP, I think it's pretty interesting that there are so few guys on here. But I for one want to get to the bottom of all this celiac stuff. I'm celiac and my wife is vegan due to a recent brush with cancer (she's 34!). So she cooks two meals every night, and makes sure they don't cross-contaminate. I don't know how she does it, she's just amazing. It... -
Donna - thanks for replying. I've tried going casein-free for a couple of months, but didn't notice any real change in any symptoms, good or bad. I've pretty much been perfect so long as I assiduously avoid gluten. But if you've had progress after 7 mo's, then maybe I will try it again. Thank you! J.

Hi there, I've had sinus trouble my entire life. Then, in 1997 or 98 (hard to pinpoint when) I lost my sense of smell almost completely. Now, even when I can breathe through my nose just fine, I can't smell anything but very strong odors, like a peeled orange, vinegar, or bleach. I was diagnosed celiac in Fall 2003, and I thought that when I finally...

ARCHIVED What Are Your Brands & Flavors Of Gluten Free Ice Cream ?
jlinc replied to Kelly J's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Nellie. I haven't had reactions to cheese ('cept lots of snot). I tried Haagen Dazs' Dulche de Leche last night and it treated me just fine. Must have been something else I was eating at the same time. Josh. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free List Of Medications Updated March 2006
jlinc replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What a great resource! In just a few minutes I was able to verify that all of the meds I take (asthma and allergies, mostly) are gorgeously gluten-free. Thank you! Josh. -
I found the quoted article below at Open Original Shared Link The blogger seems a little snake-oily, but the research paper is located on a journal that seems reputable: The American Physiological Society. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it's going to be available at your corner drug-store tomorrow. I guess there have been other tries at finding...
