Both normal endoscopic images and confocal images are available simultaneously, allowing the confocal probe to be visually positioned with the endoscope. This system allows for an immediate diagnosis and eliminates the need to take and prepare intrusive biopsy samples. The new system is an improvement over previously available confocal laser endomicroscopy systems, being easier and more intuitive to use. Studies have shown the system to be effective in diagnosing celiac disease. The Mauna Kea technologies website provides a detailed description of the device.
