Soft Corn Tortillas

I met a friend on Saturday who had been cruising in Hawaii. She brought back a bag of Mission White Corn Tortillas. It says gluten free on the back of the bag.

She says you just heat them and roll them up with refried beans or what ever you want and they are really good.

Anyone else tried these, and does anyone know where to find them. They do have a web site that I haven't yet had time to check. Its.

I ate them all the time, but I've recently found a local brand here in the bay that also makes the gluten-free claim that taste much better, they taste really fresh. Mission are good, but mass produced.

Below is the website for Mission Foods. There is a link to a store locator on the site. I don't have any trouble finding them in Southern California. This company is based in Texas.

Hope you find them.

Mission tortillas are pretty much everyone around the west coast - even the drug stores (and I'm not kidding! :o ). Other things I roll in them: tuna mixed with avocado, scrambled eggs, sliced ham, sausage.

elonwy's right, though, they are very mass produced. if you can find better ones, I recommend it. even better is making them from scratch. time consuming, but *definitely* worth it everyone once in a while.

I have never seen Mission tortillas in Alberta. Maybe you'll have better luck in BC. I did finally find Food For Life rice tortillas here.

:lol: I'm one of those people who would rather train dogs, quilt, or golf than cook or bake  I think I'd better find some in the bag.

I'll have a look for Mission here to start with, does Food For Life have a website?

Thanks for the website Phyllis, I'll check it out now and see if they are in Western Canada

I can't find a Canadian location listed, however, I see that they have four places that sell them in Colville Washington. I have a friend that goes down there on a regular basis and she picks me up what she calls my funky spices  I'll get her to pick up a few bags of these too, then will put them in the freezer.

Thanks everyone!

Oh yeah ... my funky spices is ----- a garlic, pepper, sea salt grinder made by McCormick, we can't get the grinder up here. She picks me up about 4 grinders at a time. :P

That's great to have someone be able to pick up some Mission tortillas for you.

Here is the Food For Life website.

Thanks for this! I see the closest stores in BC are on Vancouver Island, or at least out on the coast. Washington is much closer to us. So will likely go that route.

Save-On Foods just started carrying them in their freezer section. I don't recall if Nelson has a Save-On.

Shirley, I live in the Dallas, Texas area and have eaten corn tortillas all my life. As far as I know, corn tortillas are made out of only corn and as such should be gluten free. I have three different corn taco products right now and theres nothing listed that looks bad to me. Pretty simple, basic stuff. Are you concerned with cc? They have eleven plants in the US (I found this out on the website you provided). They're home offices are right here in Irving (home of the Dallas Cowboys).

...

.....They do have a web site that I haven't yet had time to check. Its. www.missionfoods.com.....

I don't know if you meant to imply that someone else had more time to check this out or if I inferred that improperly, but after about 10 seconds I found the following info:

"Q. Are Mission Foods products gluten free?

A. Mission Foods Corn products are produced with 100% corn flour, wheat ingredients are not added to the formuation. These products are produced in plants that also process wheat tortillas. These products include corn tortillas, corn tortilla chips, taco shells, tostadas, corn gorditas and sopes.

Q. Is there any wheat, rye, barley, or oats in corn tortillas?

A. No, Mission corn tortillas do not contain wheat, rye, barley or oat ingredients.

Q. Are Wheat Flour tortillas produced in the same lines as corn products?

A. No, our corn production lines are dedicated to corn products only. Wheat Flour tortillas are produced in dedicated lines.

Q. Is Wheat used in any way to make the corn products?

A. There are no Wheat ingredients or incidental wheat present in the products or on the lines that produce corn products.

Q. Is there a potential for cross-contamination of corn products with wheat ingredients?

A. All Mission Foods plants have strict food safety programs in place, including a very comprehensive Allergen Control Program."

We eat a variety of corn tortillas here. There are traditional taco shaped taco shells (heat these in an oven for a couple minutes before filling, otherwise they will be hard instead of crispy). We fill these with refried beans, taco meat (ground beef cooked with taco seasoning), fajita chicken or fajita beef, cheese, lettuce, and salsa (hot sauce), and sour cream if you like it (I do). Then there are tostadas (also called chalupas), really the same thing only flat. Think crispy corn tortillas. Used the same way as the taco shells.

I hope you can find some good corn tortillas up there in Canada. Best regards, lm

Yes! Nelson does have a Save-On-Foods! I sure hope they carry them. I shall look next time I'm in town. Unfortunately, that won't be for another week :( But I will really be happy if I find them :P You'll see me do a little happy dance  My hubby will disappear down another isle and pretend he doesn't know me.

Thank You!

And thank you larry mac for posting that on Mission foods, If I can't find the Food For Life ones here in Nelson, I will get my friend to pick up some Mission Foods ones the next time she goes across the border :P It's nice to have two options!

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
