    Celiac.com 11/10/2023 - We get a lot of questions about foods and food products. We've recently gotten a bunch about chocolate, especially the Hu Chocolate. For the uninitiated, Hu Chocolate is a brand of chocolates that is "paleo, vegan, and easy to bake with."

    While developing Hu Kitchen's paleo-inspired comfort food, the co-founders struggle finding a delicious chocolate that meets the restaurant’s strictly-vetted, simple ingredient rules, they decided to create their own delicious chocolate.

    Is Hu Chocolate gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? The short answer is yes.

    If you're a candy bar lover looking for a reliable source of gluten-free candy bars, it's always best to look for bars that specifically marked "gluten-free." 

    All Hu Dark and Milk Chocolate bars, baking chocolate and snack products are labeled as gluten-free. They are gluten-free by ingredient and allergen disclosures, making them safe for people with celiac disease. 

    Article Update 11/16/2023: The allergen statement on the package states:

    Allergy Statement: Contains coconut, cashew, hazelnut, and almond. May contain pistachio and milk. Allergen cleans made prior to production, but beware that product is produced using equipment that also processes tree nuts, soy, milk, & wheat.

    On their website their chocolate is clearly marked as gluten-free:

    I read the ingredient list on the back of a Hu Chocolate Bar a couple weeks ago in the store and there was an allergy statement that the same equipment is used to process wheat. I would highly recommend double checking the back of these bars!

    Apparently they meet the <20ppm standard for gluten-free labeling even though they are produced on equipment shared with wheat products. But they may not be safe for the more sensitive element of our celiac population.

    Yes, thank you! Certainly not safe for those in the sensitive celiac population such as myself. It’s always confusing when some products have the certified gluten-free stamp while some of the same product does not.

    We did add this info to the article, thank you. Keep in mind "made in the same facility as wheat" does not necessarily mean that the bars are not gluten-free, which the company claims that they are.
