Celiac.com 02/12/2021 - There are few soups more iconic than split pea and ham soup. Like a good clam chowder, a good split pea and ham soup is a wonder to enjoy.  In this slow cook version, the simple marriage of chicken broth, onion, ham, peas and herbs, happens as if by magic, while you're busy doing other things. It's a delicious tribute to the great split pea tradition.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 package (16 ounces) dried green split peas, rinsed
    • 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham
    • 1 large onion, chopped
    • 1 cup julienned or chopped carrots
    • 3 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1 quart chicken broth
    • 2 cups water

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
    Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a four or five quart slow cooker.

Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours or until peas are tender.

This soup freezes up really well.

Store in freezer in proper containers.

Thaw overnight before heating in a saucepan and serving hot.

In 1995 he launched the site that later became Celiac.com to help as many people as possible with celiac disease get diagnosed so they can begin to live happy, healthy gluten-free lives.  He is co-author of the book Cereal Killers, and founder and publisher of the (formerly paper) newsletter Journal of Gluten Sensitivity. In 1998 he founded The Gluten-Free Mall which he sold in 2014. Kale is on the menu in this rich, hearty and delicious Italian-style bean soup that's a perfect way to get more fiber into your diet. I use Hurst HamBeens 15 bean soup mix, but you can conceivably make this without it.  Regarding the spice packet, a note in the FAQ section of the Hurst website says: "All of our seasonings are completely gluten-free. All of our dry beans are naturally gluten free as well. We do occasionally package barley in our facility."

2 cups (1/2 bag) Hurst HamBeens 15 Bean Soup (spice packet is gluten-free) 2 cups chicken stock 1 cup water 1 can stewed tomatoes, with juice (14.5 ounce) 1 tablespoon bacon grease or olive oil 1...
