I have been gluten-free since 5/21/2013.  Overall I have done well.  Since I have silent celiac I do not know how often I have been glutened, but I do know of one instance for sure.  Here lately I have caught myself reaching out to grab a bite of something that has gluten. Like I really can!  I always catch myself though.

Want to know something else funny? You aren't gluten-free until may of this year!:)

Sometimes I start to think, I'll have....but I always catch myself. Sometimes, I stop eating what I know is fine, and think. " oops! Did I check this?"

After five years, I did the first 'unknowing, unthinking' food-in-the-mouth bit just last month.  Promptly spat it out because I knew it was gluten, and couldn't believe I had done it

I keep dreaming I've done that, but it hasn't happened in real life yet! I always wake up relieved.

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
