Getting Tested Tomorrow

I've been wondering if celiac disease or gluten sensitivity is my problem lately. I am 23 years old, diagnosed with silent reflux and Gilberts syndrome. Starting 4 years ago I started to get bad stomach cramps and diarrhea when I would go into my job on the stressful shifts. Before that I would have occasional diarrhea after eating things like chili. I thought that was fairly normal. After I had my daughter a year ago, I got extremely gassy and bloated after eating certain things. I also had increasingly more frequent diarrhea. I never took the time to notice what I ate when I had it. Lately I've been going from constipation to the opposite, and pretty bloated. I get a strange feeling at times which I can only describe as a brain fog? Like Im here but I'm not completely with it? Sort of feels like an alcohol buzz without drinking alcohol. So weird.  I notice it mostly after I eat.

I've been having a stabbing pain in my upper right side. It makes me cringe. I also get it sometimes in the upper left side.  It comes and goes. Had it about 5 times today.

I had an ultrasound done of my uterus, ovaries, liver, and gallbladder. Everything came back fine. Small cyst on my left ovary but they said that it nothing to worry about and is very common. Next they wanted to put me on Bentyl. So I've taken that a day so far. Dont notice any improvement. It is supposed to relax your stomach and intestines in the case of IBS. The last doctor I went to about these issues 2 years ago suggested I might have IBS, but then dropped me and didn't continue trying to actually figure out my problem. I'm an extremely anxious person. I had PPD after I had my daughter.

I pushed for a celiac blood test so Im getting one tomorrow. Does this sound likely, or does it sound like something else?

You have the symptoms so it could be celiac disease. It's good you are getting tested.  Try to have them run as many tests as possible. This is the full celiac lab panel:

  • tTG IgA and tTG IgG
  • DGP IgA and DGP IgG
  • EMA IgA
  • total serum IgA
  • AGA IgA and AGA IgG

The first three tests are celiac tests that show damage is being attempted on your intestines. Total serum IgA is a control test to make sure you make enough Immunoglobulin A for the other tests to be accurate; 5% of celiacs don't. The last is an older test that shows gliadin sensitivity and is thought by some to possibly work for both celiac disease and the more common non-celicac gluten intolerance (NCGI).

Get copies of your lab results and feel free to bring them back later.  :)

How long does it usually take for blood tests to come back?

How long does it usually take for blood tests to come back?

Depends on the labs. It can be a day or so, up to many weeks. I would guess that a week is the norm.

Well I got my blood drawn. Now just waiting on results. Another odd symptom that has popped up in the last 3 weeks: I feel like I have a pressure/pain on the inside of my rectum? Or cervix?? I had a pap smear like 2 months ago so everything checked out fine there. Particularly when I walk and sit down heavily I feel the pain/pressure. Its not super painful, just a little jab. Its irritating though. It felt like this right after I had my daughter a year ago and I didn't poo for 6 days. I had a tear all the way down to my rectum as well and things have always felt a bit strange down there, particularly when doing kegels. I just don't know if its related. I've been pooping fine lately, so im not constipated at the moment. Sorry, all that is like way TMI :/

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
