Muscle Twitching

Hello all.  This is my first post, and I am simply wondering if any of you here have had a similar issue after diagnosis?

Well, my story goes: I was recently diagnosed with celiacs, a month ago actually, after a while of not having it treated.  Celiacs, for me, wasn't so much as a slow build up as it was a sudden storm.  Because of the sudden on-set of it, the doctors I dealt with thought it was a heart condition, GI cancers, and other GI issues; all my tests came back negative and the doctors were confused.  It wasn't until a friend of mine who has celiacs said I might have it that I asked the doctor to test me.  My blood test came back as celiac.  The other blood tests showed, or as I was told, were consistent with someone who has celiacs; I assume that meant my vitamins and whatnot were out of balance.

After diagnosis, though, one issue has stayed.  My muscles twitch, not constantly, but a good portion of the day.  The twitching is NOT focused in one area, but likes some areas more than others.  My quads, calves, tricep, and intestinal area.  Specifically, my intestinal area when I need to go to the bathroom.

I have seen a neurologist, the physical exam showed that my eyes, strength, and coordination are normal.  I am also having an EMG test soon.

My question is: have any of you had a similar issue?  Since June, I've just been wrought with worry because the sudden on-set of everything, and I would just like to know if any of you all have had something similar to help me worry less about what might possible be wrong.

Thank you.

What you describe sounds like it could be a nutrient deficiency like low magnesium or one of the B vitamins. Celiac disease results in the mal absorbing of nutrients because of damage to the micro villi that line the small bowel. There is also something called restless body syndrome that is rather a mystery (similar to restless leg syndrome). My wife takes ropinirole for restless leg. It helps.

This is an older thread but there was quite a bit of discussion about muscle twitching:https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/64429-muscle-twitching/

There might be some info there that can help you. :)

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
