Hi all!

 

Anyone living in or near Denver? I'm a recently diagnosed celiac, just 4 months into the gluten-free thing. Still struggling, frustrated, feeling discouraged about ever being able to eat outside my house again. It would be nice to have a group of friends nearby who can share the same experiences. :-)

Hi all!

 

Anyone living in or near Denver? I'm a recently diagnosed celiac, just 4 months into the gluten-free thing. Still struggling, frustrated, feeling discouraged about ever being able to eat outside my house again. It would be nice to have a group of friends nearby who can share the same experiences. :-)

 

 

Have you googled "celiac support Denver"  I'm sure there is a group.  You live in a great area for gluten-free eating.  My son is at CSU.  We like Beau Jos for pizza.  There are all the usual good Celiac friendly places like Outback Steak, Bonefish Grill, Pf Changs, Pei Wei (? not sure if its in CO).  And a bunch more.  

 

There is someone who just mentioned a pizza place in Co Springs.  I think they have a Denver location.

Thanks Kareng, I did look that up and found the Denver Metro Celiac Support Chapter. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they are very active, they show no meetings, classes or event through April 15th. I didn't think it would be so difficult finding other celiacs here - like you said, it's a very supportive area for gluten free eating. I even tried starting a meetup group, but got no interest. All the Colorado celiacs must still be in the closet - come out out! :-)

Looks like they meet every other month and have a meeting tonight.

I didn't see that, thanks. Unfortunately, Englewood is at least 45 minutes away, and by the time I get off work tonight, I'd miss most of the meeting. Ah well, maybe in two months....

 

In the meantime and in between time, any local celiacs that want to get together, I sure would like to find them! :-)

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified...

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
