So I saw an article about gluten-free in what used to be my local newspaper. In the article there is a recipe printed, and it has WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR!!!!

I can't believe the stupidity!!!

I hope you commented. Love the question of which things might have gluten in them. I wanted to answer " the recipe we posted"

bartfull Rising Star

I wanted to say that too, but unfortunately I don't subscribe to the online edition so I couldn't. Wouldn't matter anyway - the article is, I guess the word is syndicated - it's in lots of newspapers all across the country.

kareng Grand Master

I tried to contact the paper but they let you type out a note but then it won't go. I think its a stupid April fools Joke.

kareng Grand Master

I went here and wrote to several of the emails listed.

If it's an April Fool's joke, I hope every paper that printed this gets sued. Newbies are confused enough, and I'm sure that some of them might think whole wheat flour is safe after reading this.

bartfull Rising Star

If you type the headline into google you will find lot's of other papers that ran this article. Maybe you can write to some of them.

All the websites look the same. I wonder if they are all owned by the same company.

kareng Grand Master

They are all owned by Gatehouse Media. I see phone numbers but no email.

kareng Grand Master

I called this number, chose operator option and left a message that I thought it was a tasteless and potentially dangerous April Fools Joke.

I would urge others to do this, too. A big media company like this needs to know that it isn't funny to tell Celiacs to eat whole wheat flour. They wouldn't tell someone with a peanut allergy to eat a recipe with PB in it.

I saw the icons for Facebook and Twitter on their website. I guess if you wanted to contact them online you have to go that route. I can't because I don't do either one.

Just got this response.

Hello Karen,

This article appeared on our website only, and was part of an automatic feed from our news service. It's been removed. Although the article was about varying degrees of gluten intolerance, and not necessarily about being gluten free, it is not acceptable to run only one recipe, which included wheat flour.

Well, at least he responded. I'm glad he removed it, but it would be better if he contacted the parent company and notified them of their tremendous blunder.

Looky at the note he just sent me:

Hi Karen,

We have already contacted More Content Now, the news service owned by our company, GateHouse Media, about the issue and have suggested they alert other publications.

However, this is a big company. I still think some more phone messages couldn't hurt.

I hope this article doesn't show up on our news feed.

:)

You know, I love where I live now, but besides the seafood (and other fresh foods), the autunm leaves, and of course my friends, I believe the Bulletin is one of the things I miss the most. They are good people, and this just proves it. Jim Konrad USED to be a sportswriter for them. I'm glad he got that promotion several years ago. He is a truly decent man.

And speaking of sports:

GO UCONN!!!!!  Both the men's and the women's teams!!!!!

A way to email the parent company:

And, the article was still there a few minutes ago. I'm going to assume it may take a while to get it off the site.

bartfull Rising Star

I just wrote to the email address you provided for the parent company (thanks) and told them they not only needed to pull the article, but to print a follow-up explaining that whole wheat flour will make anyone with celiac or NCGI very sick.

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
