Newly Diagnosed - Lactose Intolerant Too?

DQ2

DQ2 Newbie

I was diagnosed with Celiac this month.  I've been gluten free for 6 weeks with some mishaps along the way.  Has anyone noticed a problem with dairy after going gluten free?  I'm noticing it and trying to figure out if there is a connection.

There is definitely a link between dairy and celiac disease.  I've read that roughly half off all celiacs are lactose intolerant at diagnosis, before going gluten-free.  It is believed that is caused by the intestinal villi blunting that celiacs experience.

Lactase, the enzyme that digets the milk sugar, lactose, is made by the intestinal villi. When the villi are damaged they can no longer make lactase. Fortunately many celiacs regain the ability to tolerate milk to a certain degree after their intestines heal.  Most celiacs seem to be better able to tolerate dairy after being gluten-free for 6 to 12 months. It's often a good idea to skip dairy early in the healing process.

after I went gluten free I felt much better, but still had underlying issues. further testing revealed dairy and soy allergies.

DQ, if you haven't already, go to the coping section here and read the Newbie 101 thread. It'll help a LOT.

Thank you that’s really helpful, hopeful won’t have to have a biopsy.

That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.
