Gluten During Recovery

ThisIsMyUserName

Almost four weeks since diagnosis, many slipups, but none in almost two weeks. Today I felt super glutened (feeling poisoned, got the sweats, very nauseous) but not as bad as I have been (vomiting, horrible everything, etc). I was super, super careful lately and went back and just can't think of anything it could have been. So the key question is: is it possible I am just having some random bad moments during a slow recovery, or is it that I was definitely glutened? I find the latter discouraging, seeing how careful I've been.

In my experience, you were probably glutened. I've been shocked at the place the sneaky little glutens can hide. Did you try a new skin care product? (Many of those have gluten) Did you eat from a possible cross contaminated restaurant or bakery? (Sadly, the existence of a "gluten free" menu in a restaurant isn't enough; Flour can stay in the air for hours after it is used and contaminate your meal).

I also try to be extremely careful and have had times where I've wracked my brain to figure out what could have gluttened me to no avail. Yet the more I learn about all the places to look for hidden gluten, the more convinced I am that *somehow* a bit found it's way into my body one way or another.

The other thing you may want to consider is other food allergies?

Hang in there and I hope you feel better soon!

4 weeks gluten free isn't enough to heal Celiac. You have only been gluten-free, you think, for 2 weeks. It's just not enough time to heal. It can take a month just to get the hang of things. Even if you were completely healed and any vitamin deficiencies corrected - it can take months to get the whole system in balance and in good working order. Give it some more time.

I had a few odd moments in the first half year gluten-free where I felt glutened but I KNOW I was not because I was eating at home (my house was gluten-free).  It is not uncommon to have symptoms return for no reason in that first year.  At only 4 months gluten-free, chances are that you are still making autoantibodies so it is little wonder that symptoms return.  For most celiacs it takes a LEAST 3 months to get their autoantibodies down to normal levels - most celiacs are closer to 6 months.  I was still abnormal after 9 months gluten-free and I positive I only had 3 accidental glutenings, all in the early months of my recovery.

That being said, you may have been glutened.  Re-read all of your labels, and continue to read every label when you purchase something as well as just before you use it (sometimes it slips past you).  It will become second nature in a few more months.

Some find that taking probiotics (be very careful it is gluten-free) and L-glutamine can help a stomach feel better faster.  Might be something to consider.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
