Lab results with hypothyroidism

Hello! Friday afternoon I was given lab results by my endocrinologist 's office over the phone. Due to fatigue and numerous stomach problems for years (I was told IBS) and inability to lose weight I asked my endo to test me for celiac disease. I was scratching the numbers down on a post it so bear with me....

igA 80.3

igG 82.2

tissue transglutaminase igA sep AB 113.9

I was told all should be less than 20. I already have a call to my family dr.   to recommend a GI specialist. My questions are...has anyone else had numbers like this? Is it possible my hypothyroidism could be throwing off the numbers for a false positive for celiac disease? Thank you in advance for your comments!

Very unlikely that the results were impacted by your being hypo, but I am not a doctor!  (I do have celiac disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.) Keep eating gluten until all testing is complete.  The next step is typically an endoscopy.  At least four to six biopsy samples should be taken.

The good news is that you will start to feel so much better once you have been given the okay to go gluten free.  Be sure to check out our Newbie 101 thread for great tips.  We are here to help!

Don't go gluten free until the endoscopy is done!

Thank you so much for your reply!

I am definitely unnerved by the possibility of celiac disease and at the same time more than a little relieved that I might finally have an answer to my stomach issues that have bothered me for years. I definitely will continue to use this site.

Yesterday I finally had my GI specialist appointment and have my scope procedure scheduled for mid-January.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
