so how about this story:

a few weeks ago it was my bday and i threw a party at a bar. Well, my fav drink is ketel one on the rocks- and it never makes me sick so thats continued on my gluten-free diet. so i order one at my bday party, take a sip and it tastes AWFUL. But i had seen him pour it so i knew it was ketel one. Stupidly, i drank it anyway (mostly b/c it took forever to get a drink in the first place). so i then move on to another vodka and think nothing of it. The next morning, i have a massive hangover (i drank a LOT) and then all of the sudden, i get that kind of sick that is not a hangover...and realize ive been glutened! i cant figure out what it could be- gum? the restaurant i ate at (cross contamination?) none seemed likely so i just chalked it up to an unidentifiable mistake...until yesterday.

My roommate calls me yesterday to tell me about an article in the Post called "Botched Booze"-- all about how ketel one has recalled some of its bottles b/c there was a problem- namely, that there was an "unusually high wheat content" causing some of the wheat to remain in the product and giving the vodka a strange wheaty flavor! since then, 3 of my friends have called to tell me about the article b/c if there are two things they associate me with, they are gluten and vodka! (should i be proud of that). Sure was funny though, not only have i figured out why it tasted so bad, but also why i got sick-- mystery solved!

Yikes- that's awful! I love vodka too (I was once known as the Cosmo queen) but my cosmo days are on hold right now. Oh great sadness....

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
