Here's the article I mentioned in Mermaid's Mom's post.

It explains the way gluten gets in our brains and how we become ill.

I enjoyed the article and I think there's a lot in it, thanks for sharing it :)

However although presented as such, it's more speculative than a traditional peer reviewed paper and there are some criticisms of the approach to citations etc which I think have some validity so in the interests of balance:

Thanks for the input.  Interesting commentaries.

The authors of the article rebute the criticisms here:

Thanks, I'd looked for a response and hadn't seen that. It's good to see the authors responding and  addressing the issues raised. I did think the bible quote attack was a cheap shot and they rebutted it as such :)

As you can guess I'm on their side in this debate but try to preserve a sceptical view to counter the biases my own experience has probably left me with... It also helps to be abreast of the criticisms when sharing this to the wider world, which I guess is how public opinion will eventually be shifted.

A healthy dose of scepticism is essential on the web. But I thought the research was valid.  Yes, I agree with the biblical quote being a cheap shot. People often criticise and ridicule novel concepts that they don't want to believe...or have not experienced themselves.  Thanks for your input!

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!  Sadly, even after several years of very strict gluten avoidance, I remember the symptoms well enough that I am too frightened to risk a gluten challenge— heartbeat and breathing problems are scary— Scott, thank you for the specific information— I will call around in the new year to see if I can find anyone. In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
