Celiac tests negative , PBC joint pain

Hello everyone,

So my story.

Suspected celiac from some time now.Symptoms:

Abdominal pain right upper and lower abdomen

Extreme bloating like pregnant

Hair loss

iron deficient but normal hemoglobin

Joint pain etc

Have been first to rheumatologist.

Did a cheap (bad idea)panel blood test with all antibodies.Another doctor said these sometime are cheap and give false positives.

AMA antibody came positive. Was scared went to do liver tests all were normal.Another doctor said it was probably an error because I can.t have PBC(primary billiaey chirossis.)

So back to gastro.

Did celiac test Translutaminase IGa Igg. Were negative.I did eat gluten that time but there were maybe 2 weeks out of six when I disn.t eat.but a week before I did the test I did eat gluten.Anyway I did these some years ago and were also negative. But at a different lab some years ago it showed IGa or Igg deficiency I don.t remember. Now I did only total IGa and IGm and were normal. The thing is in my country Some labs are just bad and give false results and I have to repeat endlessly all the blood tests.

I am tired of feeling bad.I have sometimes such a severe pain like i am about to give birth.

I am scared it might be my gallblader but Actually all blood tests for that disear are normal.

And funny thing after I eliminate some gas the pain mostly goes away.so it might be the classic IBS like doctors say when they don.t know what you have.

All my life I had iron deficiency.Calcium deficiency.Vitamin d3 deficiency.

Extreme fatigue despite sleeping 13 hours.

And lots of other symptoms.

I am tired of going to endless doctors.

I might try the gluten free chalenge and forget about doint blood tests because I can.t take the pain anymore.

Can gallbladder be inflamed from celiac and show some positive antibody for PBC but still not really be PBC,?

Did anyone had similar issues?

Doctors will not do biopsy for celiac if they see the blood tests are negative so no chance for biopsy.

Welcome!

I sounds like you may not have had the complete celiac blood test panel which includes the TTG, EMA,  and the newer DGP (both IGA and IGG versions in case you have an IGA deficiency).  Learn more about testing:

Open Original Shared Link

If all else fails,  you can trial the gluten free diet for six months.  That should bring you relief if gluten is the problem.

Your gallbladder can be checked with an ultrasound or HIDA scan.

I wish you well.

We've definitely all had such thoughts.  But as Scott says, it does get easier with time.  I'm not sure where you are posting from but in England where I live, over the last ten years or so most things I missed at first now have gluten free substitutes.   I still miss Twix bars, and chocolate Penguins (a type of biscuit) but I'm hoping sooner or later someone will create a decent substitute for them! One thing that I remember my husband said to me when I was feeling down one day  was: "Why don't you try to think of all the things you can still eat, rather than the things you can't?"  The list is long, and it did help - sort of!

It looks like they are naturally gluten-free, but not labeled gluten-free. https://www.quakeroats.com/products/hot-cereals/grits/instant-grits-plain

I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way—your emotions are completely valid. A celiac diagnosis, especially at your age, is a huge adjustment, and it’s okay to grieve the foods and conveniences you’ve lost. Even with a supportive partner (which is wonderful!), the mental toll is real. Many of us have been there, staring longingly at ‘forbidden’ foods while feeling isolated or frustrated. It does get easier with time, though. The initial shock fades, gluten-free substitutes become more familiar, and you’ll find new favorites. But please be gentle with yourself now. If the sadness feels overwhelming, talking to a therapist or joining a celiac support group (online or in-person) might help. You’re not...

Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

While some radlers are made with gluten-free beer, many traditionally contain wheat-based beer, so it’s definitely good you double-checked. It’s surprising you didn’t have symptoms, but reactions can vary widely among celiacs. Some people are asymptomatic or have delayed reactions, while others feel effects immediately. Even if you didn’t notice symptoms, there could still be internal damage occurring, so it might be worth verifying the brand’s ingredients or contacting the manufacturer for clarity. In the future, sticking to certified gluten-free options or cider-based radlers could be a safer bet. Glad you’re feeling okay, but always better to err on the side of caution!
