Concern about lymph nodes

Hi everyone,

This is my first post. I am happy to find a forum for being shared and being answered. I am really despressed with my all symptoms and got confused with tons of information from google :((. Sorry if my story below is long and spend your time. I just want to be shared my worries. Thanks

I experienced some symptoms such as abdomen pains, diarrhea, fatigue, one side heachade and enlarged lymph nodes. These things are appeared more frequently after I gave birth to my baby 2 years ago. Recently, it becomes quite bad. I have met some family doctors, they did not concern anything until the recent one. She said that I should try gluten free for 1 month, diary free for 2 weeks, then returned. But I still do not do any tests for comfirming except for CBC test and ultra sound for lymph nodes. All results were normal, except for one indicator in blood test a little low (mchc). The doctor said that she had no concern. I have travelled a lot, so it was hard to eliminate gluten totally. I have had some accidentally gluten eating, so I still feel sick, especially abdomen pain and lymph nodes. I am now in strictly diet for 1.5 weeks and feel quite better, except for the lymph nodes. After 2 months, I finally can return doctor office for more discuss, though I am very worried. To talk about the lymph nodes, I have one in gland for 1 year, not movable; another in neck for about 4-5 months, movable. They are in size of a bean. Are they too big? They seem not enlarge or down size from the day I felt them. Recently, I am very scared to find that there are 2 or 3 on going in the lower neck and groin area. They are at the size of peas. And no one is bad pain, just a little discomfortable. Oh my god, I hope you guys can share my feeling... just some days you wake up and find out that some new lumps growing up in your body. That's a terrible feeling. Has anyone experienced the enlarged lymph nodes? Before or after going gluten free diet. Could the diet help to reduce their size or they will still there. I read about the link between celiac and lymphoma. I am really really scared. My daughter, she is just 2. I will have doctor appointment next week, beside the tests to comfirm celiac, should I ask her to check the lymph nodes again also. Any one got celiac and lymphoma at the same time? Please share your experience.

Thank you.

Thank you.

You should get the lymph nodes checked.

You need to be eating a regular gluten containing diet to get the best & most accurate results for celiac disease.

Celiac disease is a bit like a chameleon in symptoms with over 500 known combinations (someone else said this number). It being a autoimmune disease it would not be unheard of it effecting the lymph nodes and in fact early on my first signs of a CC was tightening and swelling of the ones in my neck. I have not noticed this with my past few encounters in the past 2 years. But as I said it is a chameleon in symptoms. You will need to be eating gluten daily for about 12 weeks for the celiac blood panel which is the standard for testing with this disease. And keep eating it for 2 weeks prior to a follow endoscope and biopsy to check for intestinal damage. You can read up more in the link http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/screening/

Thank you for your advices, Kareng and Ennis_TX. Hope you guys are still doing well with celiac. I will ask my doctor about the preparation for the Celiac screening and lymph node checking. By the way, do these test cost much?

To Ennis_TX: Did you do any test or check for your lymph nodes, when you noticed them swelling. And did you have many of them? did you member their size? Were they hurt you. Sorry for asking to much. My doctor just told me do ultra sound. I dont know should I ask her to do another tests to make sure the reason of swelling lymph nodes

I’m not sure if you will see this but what happened to your lymph nodes since this post? My endoscopy is coming up in 3 days, my whole celiac disease panel was positive. A couple of weeks ago I found a lymph node on the side of my neck. It is quite hard/firm. It’s not bone hard but not soft either. I think it’s kind of round in shape, maybe the size of a chickpea or bean. It is very movable though, I think it feels harder when I move it around because it is close to the muscles in my neck. Very scary since it has not gone away. I’m going to the doctors in a couple of weeks to go over the results from my endoscopy and I have this sore on my scalp that she wants to look at. I’ll get her to check this lymph node and the one behind my ear on the same side. That lymph node is very small but it’s tender and hard and doesn’t move.

You may know this already, but in addition to what you've described, you may also want to get a genetic test. About 1/3 of people have one of the genetic markers that are necessary (but not sufficient) for getting celiac. If your son is one of the 2/3 of people that don't have the marker then it is almost certain he does not have celiac. (The genetic test won't tell you if he has celiac, it can only tell you whether or not he is susceptible to getting celiac.)

That is really interesting, especially because it points to how the gut microbiome may still stay altered in celiac disease even after going gluten-free. The idea that a fiber like inulin could help feed beneficial bacteria and reduce inflammation is encouraging, although I imagine some people with celiac disease or other gut issues might still need to introduce it carefully depending on tolerance. It definitely feels like an area worth watching, because anything that could help support healing beyond just avoiding gluten would be valuable.

@Irishgirl5, it does sound possible for those numbers to fluctuate a bit, especially when they are near the upper end of normal, but ongoing symptoms still make it understandable that you are concerned. The fact that his tissue transglutaminase immunoglobulin A is still technically in range does not always make the picture feel any clearer, especially with tummy pain, nausea, constipation, and diarrhea still going on. Anxiety can certainly add to gastrointestinal symptoms, but I can see why you would not want to assume that explains everything. It sounds like keeping an eye on things and being cautious with diet changes makes sense, especially if symptoms continue. Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

@Stegosaurus, that is really interesting, and it sounds like you have done a lot of careful digging into what might be driving your symptoms. The connection between dysbiosis, food reactions, and specific additives or sugars is clearly complicated, but your point about hidden ingredients and individual tolerance makes a lot of sense. It is also encouraging that you found something, like the fermented Florastor approach, that seems to help you tolerate certain foods better. Posts like this are helpful because they remind people that sometimes the reaction is not just about the obvious ingredient on the label.
