Natural and Artificial Flavors

Hi everyone.

I've read that artificial flavors cannot contain gluten. Does anyone know if that's a fact? I'm asking because my mother in-law  called a candy manufacturer today(I believe it was Hershey's here in Canada) and they couldn't guarantee that those types of Kisses she was calling about contained gluten because they contain "artificial flavors". I'm asking here because as we know, sometimes those company reps are not up to date and the most knowledgeable when it comes to gluten.

Any info regarding this is greatly appreciated!

Depends on where and who they source them from...I have dealt with extract and flavoring companies that can not 100% say their extracts are gluten free because they do lines of malted extracts, beer flavored extracts, etc. They use the same packing lines just cleaned between lines with chances of contamination. Again this depends on the company and sourcing. If the company says it might not be safe simply do not eat it, common saying with this disease "If in doubt toss it out" not worth it when you can get 100% dedicated chocolates elsewhere. I have a few extract companies I trust as a bakery owner like LorAnns, Watkins, Capella Flavors.

Thank you for the link. I couldn't find anything about artificial flavoring though. Could artificial flavoring be derived from wheat, barley, rye or any other natural product?

Thanks rmj when I first rang up it was we can't do it without , but I talked to a lovely lady and she sorted it all out for me, so it pays to be persistent , I would have had to decline if I hadn't been given the water option too , so yes I'm glad too 😌

I’m so glad they listened to your concerns!  I hope you get some answers from the MRI.

Had my MRI today I didn't have to have the manitol with my allergy's , I just had a litre of water , they were great with my concerns , so let's see if anything comes of if will keep posted once I have results 👍

Thank you ,it’s been a long road for me for having both now ,what upsets the most is that if they discovered that I also have cealiac earlier I would not have injested gluten if I was aware. Double whammy.
