Continuous Weight Gain for Celiac

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease in September when liver phosphate levels were high in annual blood work. Right after that IgA and endoscopy was performed which confirmed villi damage and high inflammation. Since Sep 2017, I have been on SGF diet. The reason I went for check up in first place was low iron, Vitamin A deficiency and abrupt weight gain. In last 2 years I have gained 20 lbs which is strangely high for active life style. Since last 6 months, being on gluten free and lactose free diet but my weight is increasing and swelling on face, feet is constantly there. Some days I wake up and weight 5 lbs less and other days I am swollen and weigh much more than my normal weight. It’s surprising to doctor about why weight and inflammation can’t be controlled even though I have been working with nutritionist and following strict diet. She put me on low FODMAP diet to address intestine inflammation. It seems like now even after introducing slowly, I can’t take any lentils or other grains which used to be main source of proteins for me.  Any thing else than rice gives me stomach ache though it’s bought from gluten-free source. Being vegetarian whole my life and now gluten, lactose free, I am wondering if how can I control on weight and swelling issue. I have no thyroid issues but I am failing to control my weight even after eating control diet which is mainly Hemp protein, pumpkin seeds, other nuts, rice, potato, green vegetables, bell peppers squash. Anything else will make me highly bloated , painful stomach. Family thinks that I am paranoid and have psychological issues now. Any suggestions on reason for weight gain and uncontrollable swelling and how to take care of those. Appreciate help and thanks in advance!!

I would have them check your Thyroid again, maybe see an Endocrinologist who can order more in-depth Thyroid tests, also have the Endocrinologist check hormone levels to make sure everything is normal. Also ask to be tested for the top 10 food allergies, if you haven’t already. Hormones as we know can play a big part in weight gain or loss. Hope this helps.

The swelling etc, is commonly referred to as edema. I used to struggle with and had drink and eat duriatic foods through out the day to maintain it while avoiding sodium. Here are some things that might help

Past few years I adopted a keto/paleo diet avoiding all grains, starches, carbs, sugars. The keto diet naturally causes you to shed water weight. I do it with a ovo vegetarian diet myself with the occasional holiday fish/crab. I do keto to manage Ulcerative colitis (huge source of my inflammation) and the no meat/animal fats is to manage a issue with my pancreas. I like you live on stuff like nut butters, pecan, almond, walnut, pistachio (mill myself), rotating flax, pumpkin, sunflower, chia seeds on a bi weekly basis, egg whites, avocados, leafy green veggies, nutritional yeast, coconibs (1/4 cup a meal >.> I love my cocoa), vegan cheese, vegan cheese sauces (made myself) coconut flour/flakes/wraps, and grain free nut based baked goods.

Protein I often use vegan stuff like Naked Pea protein, Jarrow Pumpkin Protein, Julian Bakery makes a Pegan protein unflavored with sancha inchi protein, and one with pumpkin cinnamon  twist...their pegan bars are great also. Protes chips makes a grain free vegan chip out of pea protein that is GREAT. MRM makes a Veggie Elite blend that is alright...and I am weaning off of for my own blends. I used to use Nutra Key V-pro but again my rice issue.

On thing I learned when I first transition was that rice/grains, caused stomach distention and edema issues even rice protein without the carb caused my ankles and feet to swell slightly. Quinoa protein seems to not cause this oddly....BTW there is a supplement I found that I used to take to help might be of use to you. Open Original Shared Link

ONE other thing.. DROP THE HEMP PROTEIN, it is contaminated......I love hemp and I used to use the proteins daily. But the recent surge in popularity means other farmers that are non dedicated grow it now on rotation with wheat...using the same equipment to haul and harvest. I have tried, Nutiva, Manitoba, Foods Alive, Jarrow, and even the dedicated Just Hemp Foods came back positive....I glutened myself a few months back on a CERTIFIED gluten free hemp that I later Nima Tested positive, sent to a lab and came back positive....I keep buying it when a new lot comes out but so far over a year, 11 of 14lbs purchased contain gluten.  IF YOU want hemp, mygerbs.com offers the ONLY whole hemp seeds I have found that never had gluten, I sort them anyway by habit, then blend or stone mill into a hemp paste I use in cooking/smoothies.

Other causes could be diabetes, food intolerance/allergy, or a exposure to something even in the air.

No NUTRITIONAL YEAST!! NOT celiac friendly!!!! I'd say its your thyroid.  Add iodine to your diet. Regular Morton's salt.  And you could do a tincture...1 dropper full daily.

Your thinking of brewers yeast. Nutritional Yeast by KAL or Braggs is certified gluten free and not grown a gluten media, or alive. It is a great staple for vegans for vitamins and minerals. Also very useful for creating vegan cheese.

iodine is a great suggestion, I snack on gluten-free Nori, wakame, and other see veggies for mine, sodium again will lead to water retention issues in excess.

All Grains bother me...You just have to test ur own body...also...Celiac is tied to Gallbladder problems...u may need to have a hydascan to test it's function..Goodluck!

@Trish G,  I like dates, they have lots if fiber as well.  But what I found helped most was taking Thiamine (in the form Benfotiamine which helps promote intestinal healing), Pyridoxine B 6, Riboflavin B 2, and magnesium, and Omega Three fats. The absorption of nutrients is affected by Celiac disease which damages the intestinal lining of the small intestines where our nutrients are absorbed.  If you have constipation, where your body is rather pushing your food away and not interacting with it, the nutrients in the food are not being released and absorbed.  You can develop deficiencies in all the vitamins and minerals necessary for the body to function properly.   The B vitamins cannot be stored for long, so they must be replenished daily.  Thiamine B 1 stores can run out in as little as three days.  Constipation (or diarrhea or alternating) is one of the first symptoms of thiamine deficiency.  Thiamine needs magnesium, Pyridoxine B 6, and Riboflavin B 2 to make the intestinal tract function.  Thiamine and Niacin make digestive enzymes.  Thiamine provides the energy for nerve impulses to carry messages to the brain and back about digestion.  Thiamine provides the energy for the muscle contractions which move your food through the digestive tract. High calorie meals containing lots of starches and sugars can deplete thiamine stores quickly because more thiamine is required to turn them into energy.   Are you taking any vitamin and mineral supplements?  Correction of malnutrition is very important in Celiac disease.  Thiamine, the other B vitamins and magnesium will help with constipation better than adding more fiber.  What did your nutritionist recommend you take, besides just the fiber? @kpf, Were you eating ten grams or more of gluten daily in the month preceding your antibody blood tests? TTg IgA antibodies are made in the intestines.  Ten grams of gluten per day for several weeks before testing is required to provoke sufficient antibody production for the antibodies to leave the intestines and enter the blood stream and be measured in blood tests. If you had already gone gluten free or if you had lowered your consumption of gluten before testing, your results will be inaccurate and inconclusive.   See link below on gluten challenge guidelines. Have you had any genetic testing done to see if you carry genes for Celiac disease?  If you don't have genes for Celiac, look elsewhere for a diagnosis.  But if you have Celiac genes, you cannot rule out Celiac disease. You mentioned in another post that you are vegetarian.  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  The best sources of the eight essential B vitamins are found in meats.  Do you supplement any of the B vitamins as a vegetarian? Deficiency in Thiamine Vitamin B 1 is strongly associated with anemia which can cause false negatives on antibody tests.  Fatigue, numbness or tingling in extremities, difficulty with coordination, headaches and anemia are strongly associated with thiamine deficiency.  Other B vitamins that contribute to those symptoms are Riboflavin B 2, Pyridoxine B 6, Folate B 9 and B12 Cobalamine.  The eight B vitamins all work together with minerals like magnesium and iron.  So your symptoms are indicative of B vitamin deficiencies.  You can develop vitamin and mineral deficiencies just being a vegetarian and not eating good sources of B vitamins like meat.  B vitamin deficiencies are found in Celiac due to the malabsorption of nutrients because the lining of the intestines gets damaged by the antibodies produced in response to gluten.

Thanks, I'm not a big fan of prunes but did add them back after stopping the Benefiber. Hoping for the best while I wait to hear back from Nutritionist for a different fiber supplement.  Thanks again

If you were wondering why milk protein bothers you with Celiac Disease.  Commercial dairies supplement the cow feed with wheat, which becomes incorporated in the milk protein. Milk omega 6 to omega 3 ratio: Commercial Dairies: 5:1 Organic Milk: 3:1 Grass fed milk: 1:1

My TMJ ended when I lost a middle lower molar.  I had an amalgam filling from youth (1960s) that failed and the tooth broke.  I had what was left pulled and did not bother to replace it.  My bite shifted and the TMJ went away.  I just had to be careful eating M&M Peanuts because they would get stuck in the hole.
