Trans Ocean Snacks & Seafood

I just wanted to share a new gluten-free snack I found.  It's by a company called Trans Ocean.  They are seafood snack sticks. Zero fat, low cholesterol, and a nice source of protein. A local store had them in the sale flyer for $1 each (normally 4 packs for $5). I am trying to find snacks and protein and low cholesterol, low fat items, so this was perfect timing. It is a little pricey, but to have one or two a week works well in my budget. I think this will be great for a quick breakfast or something.  I need to watch the eggs (or at least the egg yolks) now, so just another healthy choice.

Trans Ocean also sells other gluten-free seafood things like the imitation crab meat, etc, if you like making a seafood salad with that. My husband made it for me once and with some lettuce and tomato on cloud bread, it was really good.

The seafood sticks you could dip in cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, or some spicy mustard, or just eat plain.  I love finding gluten-free items that are also healthy, low or zero fat, and low or zero cholesterol.

Yep I have them on the list lol, I found them at a expo two years....corn free also, was like OMFG. They only had one sample and none to sell that year....Next year they recognized me and give me 6 packages to take home...BTW it freezes great, try adding some to baked goods....I mince some up and add to my garlic cheesy bread or roll recipe, to to let it mix in with the batter a bit first but so worth it for a seafood bread. I also scramble with eggs or in a quiche and serve with a tiny bit of cocktail sauce.

Amusingly I normally react to oats...but these do not bother me....I wonder if they use a chemically bleached/wash to remove the proteins from the fiber?

Wow, I am losing it. I didn't even read all the ingredients and didn't realize there was oat in it. If it doesn't bother you, maybe it won't bother me. I will have to pay attention to that.  I can't believe I forgot to read all the ingredients. I must be getting tired. So, I just read the ingredients to the imitation classic crab, and it has soy.  I did have it once before though when my stomach was starting to feel better, so maybe in small amounts it doesn't bother me?  I was also still taking two supplements that had soy in them when my stomach started feeling better. Maybe it's corn product that bothers me more.  I am doing something wrong lately though, because my stomach has not been good in a while.

The imitation crab also says it contains some shellfish, including lobster (or juice), and I had a very bad reaction to lobster years ago.  I have avoided it ever since.

It's good to know these freeze well.  I didn't dare buy more of the seafood sticks because they expired yesterday.  I wasn't sure if they had been previously frozen or not.   Sounds like it'd be delicious in breads. I was wanting to try making some biscuits from the Cream of Rice recipe website sometime.  Adding seafood to it sounds good.

Do you ever use Old Bay seasoning?  I think I read it is gluten-free, but was wanting to check ingredients and see for sure, and if its soy and corn free.

I only use 3 companies seasonings, I mostly use spicely organics, but fell in love with the blends from Big Axe Spice, I use The Spice House for Chorizo Sausage, Merigenz Sausage for making vegan sausage and other things like eggs taste like sausage is in them.

A sausage spice would be yummy!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
