Turkey - Always Gluten Free?

Hello!

I was diagnosed with celiac about ten months ago and it’s been a bit of a rough year of the learning curve and healing.

When I eat gluten - unfortunately I have pretty bad symptoms (puking 4-5 times).

Last night after Thanksgiving (Canadian) dinner I was very ill. My mom is so good about gluten free cooking and cross contamination (my dad also has celiac - but his symptoms are not as extreme). 

Thinking back the last THREE times I have been gluten - have all involved turkey (ground turkey, full turkey, etc.) Is it possible that turkey has gluten preservatives in it? Has anyone else run into this problem with turkey or other meats? I eat chicken all the time with no issues.

I have never had issues with butter ball or riverside brands and do thanksgiving dinners for family and friends with them. Things to consider, was the turkey stuffed? What about the stuffing, what about the herbs, did the coat it in butter that might have been CCed? Was there a glaze packet used with it? Was there a gravy packet with it? Any seasonings? How as it cooked, IE was the cooking pan CCed one year with something and the same pan CCing the turkey every time every year?

It might be an intolerance.  Your Dad is like your canary.  If he is fine (even though the severity of his symptoms are less that yours), you can probably rule out gluten as the culprit.

It's a good idea to check with the seller of the turkey on the gluten status.  Glaze packets in the USA are usually not a problem as you can simply throw them away.

      I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

      Yarrow Pom works really well with the skin issues I found out.I had to stop so my doterra because dealing with medical celiac circus. I had shingles in Feb 2023. Prayers for healing

      I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50.
