This is cross-posted in Live Journal community, but I was looking up all the problems related to UTI (mild fever, chills, pain, upset stomach, low back pain, vomiting, a constant need to urinate or an inability to urinate at all, blood in the urine, and pain or a burning sensation during urination, fatigue, rib pain, nausea. foul-smelling urine, frequent urination).

OK I combined symptoms of kidney and bladder infection (because kidney only has a couple extra).

I have been experiencing every one of those for a few days now, much worse today, except for blood in urine, and especially the pain after urinating, so bad I can barely sit through class...should I go to emergancy at the hospital tomorrow after 6 pm?? (i cant get in any sooner than that)

Yes--you should go to a doctor as soon as possible. You could have a kidney infection, and that is serious if not treated quickly. My mom was visiting us several years ago and developed your symptoms--we took her to the Dr. and he put her on antibiotics. After a few days of rest and the meds. she did fine. Please don't wait too long!

Yeah I'm going tomorrow after 6 pm .. because I keep feeling worse and worse. Not sure how i'm going to study for a quiz I have tomorrow. Such a horrible stomach...

I had school from 12-7:30, but had to wait for my dad to finish work so I didnt get home til 10, and I have class from 9:30 - 1:30 tomorrow, but I gotta wait for dad to finish work at 6, so I'll just go to emergancy I guess around 7 when I get home. Hopefully a doctor will still be around. :unsure:

I do not want to alarm you, but you should not ignore your symptoms and wait to go see a doctor. I frequently have UTI's and now know immediately when I have one.

The first time I got one, I ignored the symptoms and three days later had an ambulance at my apartment in the middle of the night because I woke up with stabbing pains in my lower back, fever/chills, shaking uncontrollably. I was brought to the emergency room and diagnosed with a kidney infection. I was kept over night hooked up to an IV. Basically, I let my UTI develop into a kidney infection by ignoring the symptoms. UTI's are easily diagnosed by a doctor and antibiotics will cure you. In fact, the antibiotics kick in within a day or two and you will start to feel better immediately.

Lisa, I don't want to worry you, only to make you aware.

For years I have suffered blood in urine (highest on the charts, but not actually visible) and frequent urination. Doctors usually said that some people have these symptoms. Only recently another doctor made me aware of a condition called nephropathy, which can be very severe (can lead to kidney failure), this is also mentioned in "Dangerous Grains". Since going gluten-free my symptoms have diminished, but what worries me most is that some gluten damage is irreversible, so I am hoping that by diet I can keep it at bay.

Please don't get fobbed off with just antibiotics; I would ask for a kidney function test, especially if your symptoms keep returning.

Yeah I went at almost 7, and the doctor was still there thankfully, so I had to sit there for an hour, give a urine sample (thats what took so long).

And well he didnt tell me what it was, just wrote the prescription. So dad took me to the pharmacy (hes always there after hours--the pharmasist lol) and I got um Macrobid (which I HATE taking, because I have very difficulty swallowing pills/capsules). Pharmasist told me its for bladder and kidney infection (so i'm not sure which of the 2 I have). But definitely one of them.

This could look a bit weird popping a pill in the middle of a lunch room in school on monday, tuesday, and wednesday ...

I am glad you went, Lisa. And you know what? It's not likely anybody will even notice you taking the pills. Besides, I am sure you're not the only one having to take some sort of pill at lunchtime!

Actually, until the lab results come back, the doctor won't know exactly what you have, either. He just decided that your symptoms look like a bladder or kidney infection and wanted you started on something to address the issue right away, because it wasn't safe to wait. I am sure you'll find out eventually what exactly it was (from your family doctor, who will be given the results).

I hope you'll start feeling better soon!

Your symptoms sound like mine when I had a UTI a few months ago. I aslo had pain in the urine, and it hurt SO bad (most pain I've ever had), and felt like I constantly needed to *go*, though I couldn't...fever, chills, sweats. Went to the ER, they took blood, hooked me up to an IV and gave me pain meds and antibiotics b/c it was hemorragic (sp?) cystitis. Simply put, bladder infection with blood.

That's what it sounds like yours is, but just continue on those meds, and drink more fluids than you ever have before, and um...clean up well in that region! ;) The fluids will really help to flush it out of you.

Glad you went and are now on something for the infection. I was worried about you! If you don't make a big deal about taking the pill, I bet no one will even notice :) Feel better.

HAVING HAD ALOT OF KIDNEY AND BLADDER PROBLEMS I WOULD SAY GO TO THE ER RIGHT NOW. DO NOT WAIT.

I keep thinking that things in the medical community are improving, but a shocking number of people still post here who have already discovered gluten is their issue, and their doctors ordered a blood test and/or endoscopy for celiac disease, yet never mentioned that the protocol for such screening requires them to be eating...

      The rate of damage to the villous lining of the SB and the corresponding loss of nutrient absorbing efficiency varies tremendously from celiac to celiac. Yes, probably is dose dependent if, by dose dependent you mean the amount of exposure to gluten. But damage rates and level of sensitivity also seem to depend on the genetic profile. Those with both genes...

      Have Tru Joy Sweets Choco Chews been discontinued??

      Help! My 5 year old daughter just stopped eating dairy and gluten due to her EoE and Celiac. Her favorite candy in the world is tootsie rolls. I did some research, and it sounds like these are the only options for finding something similar, but I can't find them anywhere to actually purchase. Have they been discontinued?? Does anyone have another recommendation...

      I wonder how long it usually takes and if it is dose dependent as well... or if some ppl have a more pronounced reaction to gluten than others thanks again for all the great info

      Thank you for the kind words! I keep thinking that things in the medical community are improving, but a shocking number of people still post here who have already discovered gluten is their issue, and their doctors ordered a blood test and/or endoscopy for celiac disease, yet never mentioned that the protocol for such screening requires them to be eating gluten daily for weeks beforehand. Many have already gone gluten-free during their pre-screening period, thus their test results end up false negative, leaving them confused and sometimes untreated. It is sad that so few doctors attended your workshops, but it doesn't surprise me. It seems like the protocols for any type of screening should just pop up on their computer screens whenever any type of medical test is ordered, not just for celiac disease--such basic technological solutions could actually educate those in the medical community over time.

Those with both genes HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 seem to be more sensitive to minor amounts of gluten exposure than those with just one of those genes and those with only DQ2 seem to be more sensitive than those with only DQ8. But there are probably many factors that influence the damage rate to the villi as well as intensity of reaction to exposure. There is still a lot we don't know. One of the gray areas is in regard to those who are "silent" celiacs, i.e. those who seem to be asymptomatic or whose symptoms are so minor that they don't garner attention. When they get a small exposure (such as happens in cross contamination) and have no symptoms does that equate to no inflammation? We don't necessarily know. The "sensitive" celiac knows without a doubt, however, when they get exposure from cross contamination and the helps them know better what food products to avoid.
