My Dentist...

So I’m not sure if there is already a thread about this. I am coming up on my 2 year mark post diagnosis. A few weeks ago I finally made a dental appointment (finally feeling good enough to do it) Was super nervous about going in for my cleaning. Good thing I brought in my own stuff because they didn’t seem to really understand how sensitive I am to trace amounts of gluten. I ended up being told by the Dentist that I need a few fillings. Which didn’t surprise me I’ve had cavities ever since I was little. My question is what do I need to look for with the materials they are going to use for my fillings? I sent my Dentist an article that said most products he would use might contain gluten. He basically brushed me off. Is that something I really need to worry about?? I don’t want to get fillings if the material has gluten and will be in my mouth. I’m the only one I know who has celiac so I don’t have anyone else to ask what they’ve had to do when going to the dentist. I would appreciate any help! My anxiety is just crazy right now thinking about it.

I haven’t encountered gluten in anything at the dentist. I am in the US, but not sure that matters.  In fact, was just talking with the hygienist and she said that before they used to have to ask companies about gluten now most stuff is labeled gluten-free.  But the dentist isn’t usually the one who seems to pay attention to that ( and his daughter has Celiac).

i can’t imagine how there would be gluten in a filling?  I think you are safe there.

Ok thanks for the info. I just found an article that said gluten can possibly be found in: the topical anesthetic, pulp cap, acid etch, bonding agents, the composite filling and polishing paste they might use. So wasn’t sure if anyone had run into that in their own dental visits.

I guess it’s theoretically possible gluten could be just about anywhere.  But lots of us have had dental work - lots very extensive- as Celiac tends to mess up teeth.  You could get the brands , etc and try to contact them. But I never bother any longer.

What I think you need is a new dentist.  My dentist takes me seriously.  We have been with him since he opened his practice and he trained with our old dentist who was very highly regarded around here by other dentists — not just patients.

He and his staff check the labels and calls suppliers.   They even let me read the labels!   Since my diagnosis, he says that dental suppliers are more gluten savvy.  He is not seeing any gluten in products.

Take care of your teeth.  Celiacs are prone to more dental issues.

You are the customer. You deserve better.  I would find another dentist.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
