Mushroom Manure/ Vegetable Gardening Soil

Hello All,

My daughter (8yr) has celiac disease.

We are trying to start a vegetable garden at our new house. Mushroom manure seems to be a common recommendation. Our local landscape supply company has top soil mixed with mushroom manure.  However, it does have wheat mixed through it as part of the manure.

We wash our vegetables so I am not worried about it being on the vegetables. My concern is my daughter working and digging through the soil. Similarly how I wouldn’t let her play with flour even though she wouldn’t eat or lick it. but it would be in the air etc.

Our home is as gluten free as reasonably possible (even the drywall - yes there is gluten in many types of drywall - which can be an issue with construction/ drywall repairs) and so I am hesitant to bring it into the garden.

Has anyone worked with mushroom manure? Do you think this would be an issue? Any alternative suggestions?

We are limited because of what is available because of covid19 and also we just moved so we don’t have our compost bin up and running yet.

We are placed in the middle of the woods... decomposing leaves + premium top soil + peat moss?

Thank so much! I appreciate this community.

Hi!

I think the compost would be just fine.  She is not eating the stuff.  It should not go airborne either.  Besides, wheat straw is mostly used.     Grain is expensive.  I would imagine not much is found in it, just a few that managed to escape harvest.  I would not worry about it.

Good luck on starting your garden and new compost heap.  I am in Sunny California, so my home made compost breaks down pretty fast.  I only use that and I get great growth (plant in ground) and often volunteers which I let grow or move.  Have some tomatoes that are already flowering from last year.  ?

I’m in a flare up with rib pain. I read where others have experienced this after exposure to gluten.  Has anyone found something that eases the pain.

Scott Adams/Trents - Thanks!  I will definitely do some more research.  I welcome any and all advice.

Yes, I've read that online but I was just surprised that no one has mentioned it on this forum specifically.  We have not had our follow up meeting with the Dr where I'm sure she will advise as to how he needs to deal with this ailment.  I have learned from past health issues - if you want to find the REAL truth - talk to someone living with the disease.  THEY will know way more than any doctor ever could.    Thanks for responding.
