Pain/Discomfort in left side of ribs

Miss Johnson

Recommended Posts

Miss Johnson Newbie

I have already been diagnosed with Celiac disease, but wasn’t sure if this is linked to it. On and off for the last month I have had pains in my lower ribs (predominantly on the left side). It is a cross between pain and discomfort, as if something is digging into my side. Neither painkillers nor a heat pack has helped and it is becoming unbearable ?. I am currently not on a gluten free diet as we struggle to find any cheap enough. Does anyone know if this is a flare-up and if so, how I can deal with it?

Certainly if you've been diagnosed with celiac disease and are still eating gluten this could be caused by that. Of course it could be other things as well, and you should consult with your doctor about this. The first step after getting a celiac disease diagnosis would be to go on a 100% gluten-free diet. It does not have to be expensive.

This post might help:

Gluten free does not need to be expensive.  If you are looking for gluten free processed foods like bread or cookies, then yes.  It is certainly more expensive.

You should be able to find dried beans, rice, vegetables, fruit, meats, nuts, fish, eggs (dairy should be avoided if you find that you are lactose intolerant).

I hope you feel better soon.  It sounds like you need to go gluten free.  I wish there was an easier way, but there is not.  Know that you are at a higher risk for cancer and developing other autoimmune diseases, anemia and osteoporosis.  Know that celiac disease is genetic and your family members should be screened.

I wish you well.

Thank you for the advice. I’ve actually never checked for nutritional deficiencies, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve always taken vitamin and mineral supplements — otherwise my symptoms get worse. This week I stopped eating gluten to confirm whether my symptoms are really caused by it. Starting next week, I’ll reintroduce gluten — it’s sad to go back to how I was before — but at least I’ll be able to take the necessary tests properly. I think the diagnostic process will be long, but at least I’m happy that I finally decided to address this doubt I’ve had for years.

Hey Julie! I was in a similar situation before my biopsy and my gastro said Tylenol was fine. Just avoid ibuprofen or anything anti-inflammatory until you're cleared. Hope your surgery goes smoothly!

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!
