Women Who Is "celiac" Free After Going Off Diet

I was concerned when I read the recent article about the woman being symptom free for 15 months as nothing was said about the state of her vili. I was diagnosed with celiac as t 7 year old child and put on a fat-free, starch-free diet (in the 1950's) I was on this diet until my early teens. At that time, I was doing so well that they gradually weaned me from the diet and I showed no symptoms. Everyone thought I was fine. Then about 6 years later, I attended Washington U and a doctor was doing celiac research. When I went to see him, he said from the way I looked he doubted I had ever had celiac. However, he was curious and took a biopsy and enzyme tests. I had essentially no vili at that time and only 1/3 the normal enzymes for maltose, glucose, and lactose. It was amazing to feel so well and be told that. I have been on a gluten-free diet since because even if you don't have symptoms, one's intestine can still have problems. I have had biopsies since then and the vili look great now :)

After reading the full article, I learned they did to biopsies and so no intestinal damage. That's not to say it won't pop up in a few more years.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
