I Survived!

I hope you all are having a great weekend!

I survived my first gluten-free lock in with my girl scouts! I didn't get glutened!

They all had papa john's pizza, so I brought my own chebe crust & toppings. My co-leader and the parent that were there were good about not making me handle the glutened pizza, or potentially glutened popcorn.

The girls didn't even ask why I had a different pizza

the funny thing is that when I told the parent I had celiac disease, she looked at me as if my best friend had just died and said, "Oh my God, I am so sorry! That's just awful!"

I was thinking, not so much. You're the one that has to eat the papa john's, and I have my gourmet pesto pizza. Poor me.;)

I have a feeling the camping trips might prove to be more of a challenge...

How have you guys handled such situations, ie parties, sleepovers with kids, etc?

I haven't had to deal with camping or sleepover situations yet... but last night my daughter went to a Father Daughter dinner dance that was catered, and I talked to the co chair of the event (just so happens she used to work at the daycare my daughter went to, so she's known her since she was a baby) and I got the menu for the dinner and I sent her food with my husband... he delivered her meal to this lady (Sherry) and she made sure that she served my daughter herself, at the appropriate time and put her meal on a pretty plate like everyone elses! My daughter felt so special and no one else noticed that she wasn't having the same thing, because it looked close enough! I love it when a plan comes together like that!

Nini--what a sweet story :) . I'm so happy that she felt 'normal' and you all should be so proud that it all happened the way it did. I'm sure your daughter will remember the Father/Daughter Dance for the rest of her life.

I hope so! I'm just glad she had a good time and that the food was not the focus of the evening, and she didn't have to worry about it! I heard from her daddy that at one point she was dancing with her friends and some other dads were commenting on how they could really dance! (my daughter has taken dance since she was 3...)

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.

Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.

This is a really common area of confusion. Most natural cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Parmesan, brie, camembert, and most blue cheeses) are inherently gluten-free, and you’re right that the molds used today are typically grown on gluten-free media. The bigger risks tend to come from processed cheeses: shredded cheese (anti-caking agents), cheese spreads, beer-washed rinds, smoke-flavored cheeses, and anything with added seasonings or “natural flavors,” where cross-contact can happen. As for yeast, you’re also correct — yeast itself is gluten-free. The issue is the source: brewer’s yeast and yeast extracts can be derived from barley unless labeled gluten-free, while baker’s yeast is generally safe. When in doubt, sticking with whole, unprocessed cheeses and products specifically labeled gluten-free is the safest approach, especially if you’re highly sensitive.
