Acne caused by gluten-free foods or soaps?

Hi all,

I recently was diagnosed with celiac disease and have been on a strict gluten-free diet for 7 months now. A few weeks after going gluten-free I started to get acne breakouts on my face, shoulders and back. I'm 23 and have never struggled with acne before (especially body acne). I'm confused because most of the research I've done talks about people going gluten-free to get RID of acne... not getting acne after going gluten-free. I've never had DH and based on photos I don't believe that's what's happening. I haven't switched any soaps or moisturizers so I can't help but think my breakouts may be a result from eating gluten alternatives or from gluten-containing body soaps. I try to eat whole foods but the biggest change for me since going gluten-free would be using a 1-1 gluten-free flour mix while baking.

Could my breakouts possibly be linked to eating gluten alternatives? Or is it possible that body soap containing wheat could cause body acne? I'm starting to get frustrated not being able to find a solution to this and am curious if anyone has some answers from their personal experience.

Thanks in advance!

If the outbreaks are DH then it is possible that either something you are eating, or something you are using on your skin could be causing them...or both.

The first step would be to make 100% sure that your diet is indeed gluten-free. Is it possible that a flour you are using is contaminated? Do you eat out? There are many possible ways gluten could still be getting into your diet.

I would also use gluten-free cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc.

I don't think your issues are caused by a gluten-free diet.

Good morning! I have not been diagnosed with DH, but sometimes I wonder. Mine looks more like an atopic or contact dermatitis when I look at the pictures. I have gone to gluten free soaps, shampoos, lotions, toothpaste, and any other liquid my skin comes in contact with (including my dish soap). My skin feels so much better!

Ichthus is the Greek word (using English letters) for fish. The letters in the actual Greek word form an acronym that come from the first letters in the Greek words for "Jesus", "God's Son," "Savior".   Now, back to your family's denial of your celiac disease, I think you can relate to this:

Thanks for the kind words. It's hard to convince my doctor to investigate further because of a negative blood test and he only tested me for one marker. 🙃 I've come to the point where I need to take this into my own hands because the doctors are infuriating and it's not going anywhere. I've been gluten free for a week and feeling better but I was still consuming dairy and I think that's what's backing me up. Next week no dairy introduced.

Hello mantooth nice to meet you it's so uncanny what you wrote you sound just like me even the back issues are exactly the same and I'm new here too trying to find out if I have the same had I too have been struggling to find answers with my docters I don't have a diagnosis but I've been struggling like forever and was told ibs and health aniexty was my problem but on researching I've come to the conclusion it's probably more because i cut gluten and lactose out for 6 months and  it was a incredible change for me so although I can't help with diagnosis I can say your not alone in trying  to find answers 😊
