Self-diagnosis and recovery time

Hello,

Did anyone self-diagnose celiac, and only after a year wanted to get diagnosed by their doctor? If so, did it go as expected?

Another question: Is it normal to go around 6 months before stomach pain and heartburn subside on gfd?

We published an article years ago that said the average time to recover from celiac disease is two years. That said, if your diet has been 100% gluten-free, usually meaning that you don't eat outside your home, I believe it would still be unusual to have the ongoing symptoms you describe. You could have additional food intolerances, and this article might be helpful:

If you do go the route of additional testing, this article will help:

Thanks Scott!

It has been around a year since I went gluten-free, and most of the stomach pain and heartburn issues resolved more or less in 6 months. Nowadays I am almost pain free, but I have read many recovery stories where the pain subsides in days/weeks, so I was wondering how normal it was to go many months before the pain went away.

I think it's pretty normal for healing to take a while, and how long it takes can depend on the condition of your gut/villi, and how well you stay gluten-free.

The topic has come up in the forum a lot: https://www.celiac.com/search/?q=lymphocytic colitis&quick=1&type=forums_topic and here are discussions with "colitis": https://www.celiac.com/search/?&q=colitis&type=forums_topic&quick=1&search_and_or=and&sortby=relevancy

I’m in a flare up with rib pain. I read where others have experienced this after exposure to gluten.  Has anyone found something that eases the pain.

Scott Adams/Trents - Thanks!  I will definitely do some more research.  I welcome any and all advice.

Yes, I've read that online but I was just surprised that no one has mentioned it on this forum specifically.  We have not had our follow up meeting with the Dr where I'm sure she will advise as to how he needs to deal with this ailment.  I have learned from past health issues - if you want to find the REAL truth - talk to someone living with the disease.  THEY will know way more than any doctor ever could.    Thanks for responding.
