Covid caused reoccurrence of DH without eating gluten

Hi, it has been years since I posted.  I think I was posting back when it first started sometime around 2003 or so???  It was so helpful and a wonderful site to find help with all the questions we had early on!

I probably had Celiac most of my life but was not Dx until 2005.  I first was diagnosed with Celiac and then had a DH breakout a few months later...so I have both.  I had Covid last April and recovered quickly and then I got covid again right after Christmas this year.  I lost my smell and taste both times.  This second time I also woke up about 3 days after onset with the horrible DH rash on both sides of my back and was wondering if this has happened to anyone else.  Our entire family including husband and 3 children have been dx with celiac so we never have gluten in the house.  I take lots of vitamins that are definitely gluten free and eat only organic/NonGMO and unprocessed foods.

Has anyone else experienced this?  My brother-in-law also experienced the same thing in November of this year.  He is also dx with DH.

Also, I have not been vaccinated.

It's never too late to get vaccinated...that is, until it's too late! 🙂

And, welcome back!

Although we've had reports here that the Covid-19 vaccine, or getting the virus itself, may have triggered celiac disease in some people, I've not heard that it could trigger a DH rash. To me it seems more likely that some gluten may have slipped into your diet, but who knows? It will be interesting to see if this has happened to others.

LOL, well, I have low Platelets/ITP/Thrombocytopenia and Low white counts so my Drs. advised me not to take the vaccines.  The first part of the covid Dec 28...was the typical flu with fever and headache that lasted less than 3 days.  I think the rash started then.  I thought wow this was easy but the next day the mucousy cough started that lasted about a week.  I lost my taste, but it is almost back now.  I did use Ivermectin and hydroxycloroquine.  Plus a lot of vitamins!  I did not get major fatigue.  My husband on the other had had a mild fever 102 and severe back pain at night and used IBpro. which he never uses...ever!  He also was better in about 3 days with this....but he then started the difficulty breathing and major fatigue...we had an oxymeter so we kept close watch and had a couple scary days but he finally turned the corner and is back to the gym.  What is interesting is, this probably came from a Xmas eve visit by my neighbors for 15 or so minutes...no one was sick but a few days later we got the call the mom and dad tested positive.  So, I had the same symptoms as the mom fever and mucousy cough and my husband had the same symptoms as the father.  The father was dx with pneumonia which we recently found out.

The possibility of gluten in my house is zero to none lol!  No one is allowed to bring gluten into my house and we hadn't been anywhere or eaten anyone else's food.

The strange thing is by brother-in-law who we also haven't seen in months had the same symptoms as my husband and also had breathing issues and itchy red rash on his back...he was dx last year with DH.

Likely one or the other or both of these drugs were not gluten free.

Jason, I have a bone to pick with your terminology. There is "gluten intolerance" which I believe is synonymous with celiac disease and then there is "gluten sensitivity" which comes from Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or NCGS for short. It is true, however, that there is still a lot of inconsistency in the use of these terms.

I can’t say this will work for everyone but for me the difference is incredible so might be worth trying. I’ve never been diagnosed celiac but via an elimination diet I realised I can’t eat any lectins, gluten soy and oats are particularly problematic. If I eat them I’m in bed for a week, then heavy bleeding and extreme pain for another, followed by a third week of bleeding on and off. My skin was a mess and it snowed when I brushed my hair. Since taking reishi and cordyceps mushroom tincture I can’t believe the difference, I’ve had a lot of help from this site so I want to return the favour. I took the tincture for my guts but the most apparent effect is that I feel like my brain works again, I can’t begin to describe how wonderful it is to be able to achieve basic things, I’ve barely been able to organise getting out of bed for so long, it feels like I haven’t been hit over the head with a mallet for the first time in years. Then I glutened myself, not necessarily gluten as so many things wipe me out but definitely ate something I shouldn’t have, I took a treble dose of the tincture and almost immediately felt much better so continued with the increased dose and three days (not weeks) later was back to feeling great, no bleeding involved. My skin is better than I can remember it ever being, I feel great 😊. I spend £1.50 a day on these but it’s worth every penny, I hope this helps someone else out there reading this. I wish I’d known about them 20 years ago. best wishes everyone 🍄

Given your history of a high TTG (167) that decreased to 16 on a gluten-free diet, along with genetic confirmation of celiac disease, it’s likely the negative biopsy is a false negative due to not eating gluten before the endoscopy. Gluten is necessary to trigger the intestinal damage seen in celiac disease, and avoiding it can lead to healing and a normal biopsy despite ongoing immune activity (reflected in your still-elevated TTG). The inflammation observed during the endoscopy (“diffuse moderately erythematous mucosa”) could be residual damage, mild ongoing inflammation, or another condition like peptic duodenitis, but it’s consistent with celiac disease in context. Continued positive blood markers suggest ongoing gluten exposure, possibly from cross-contamination or hidden sources. Strict adherence to a gluten-free diet and follow-up testing are key to managing symptoms and reducing inflammation. Discuss these findings with your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and refine your dietary approach. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Yes, it sounds like great progress, but what was the time frame between the two endoscopies?
