Hi everyone, I would like to know how can I get tested without having to gluten because I already can't eat it. Is there a way for me to get tested without having to eat gluten? Suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Sorry, but there is not. If you are already eating gluten-free let's ask the most important question. Did your symptoms improve significantly with eliminating gluten?

If your answer is this clear, and you already know that you cannot tolerate gluten, there is probably a little reason for you to go through a gluten challenge to get tested. Most people want a diagnosis because the diet is very tough to stay on for life, but to me it sounds like you already have your answer.

Welcome to the forum, @Maria33255!

For peace of mind, you might try a DNA test to see if you have any of the most common genes for Celiac Disease.  Not all Celiac genes are known.  Just having the genes doesn't necessarily mean the genes are activated and causing Celiac.  But, since you have improvement on the gluten free diet, it might be a safe assumption to make.

I couldn't stay on a gluten challenge long enough for blood tests to be accurate, but I do have two Celiac Disease genes.  Having genes and improvement on gluten free diet is enough for me.

Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks for your comments everyone. To give you a background on my condition, I have leaky gut syndrome. My symptoms improved when my naturopath introduced a gluten and lactose free diet which worked together with their prescription. However, when I am under stress, I get a severe case of dermatitis herpetiformis that spreads on parts of my body followed by other symptoms that are worrying me. That is why, I wish to get tested to perhaps rule it out. I just don't want to consume gluten to do the test because I already have rashes all over my body and I don't want it to get worse than it already is. Perhaps the DNA test may be safer for me to take.

As you may know, the DNA test can only establish the potential for developing celiac disease. It cannot establish whether or not you do have celiac disease. It takes both the potential and some kind of triggering stress event (such as a viral infection) to turn potential into active.

But you say when you get stressed you get DH. How do you know it's DH? Have you had a skin biopsy done to confirm that? If in fact you do have DH then that confirms you do have celiac disease since there is no other cause for DH.

Hi, Maria!

Are you having Dermatitis Herpetiformis outbreaks or could you be having Hives?

Dermatitis Herpetiformis outbreaks usually occur after exposure to gluten.  Iodine (as in iodized salt, eggs, dairy, and seafood) can make DH flare.  Have you kept a food journal to see if there's an association with something in your diet?  Do you eat processed gluten free facsimile foods?  Some food preservatives and food coloring can trigger DH flares.

Hives can flare up when under stress, after exercise, and when experiencing temperature changes (going from warm inside to cold outside for example).

Do these rashes get worse when you have been out in the sun?

What prescription did your naturopath give you?

What are the "other symptoms" that are worrying you?   We could be more helpful if we knew a little bit more.

Looking for help sourcing gluten-free products that do not contain potato or corn derived ingredients. I have other autoimmune conditions (Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogrens) so I’m looking for prepared foods as I have fatigue and cannot devote a lot of time to baking my own treats.

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.

PS - I think you meant this site, but I don't believe it has been updated in years: http://glutenfreedrugs.com/ so it is best to use: You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
