Weight Loss

I was diagnosed with celiac about two weeks ago and have been eating only gluten free foods. I am eating meat and vegetables with my meals.  I eat snacks, potato chips, cheese balls, which are all gluten free. I have lost about six pounds. Should I be losing weight? I also find myself craving watermelon.

Welcome to the forum, Barr W!

When you eliminate wheat from the diet, most of us would automatically be eliminating a significant amount of carbohydrates and calories that we were taking in previously.

Cravings for certain foods can be an indication of a nutrient deficiency and nutrient deficiencies generally come with the territory of celiac disease. The damage done to the villi of the small bowel can greatly reduce the surface area of nutrient absorption such that, even though we may be eating well, the nutrients are just passing through. Are you taking any vitamin and mineral supplements to compensate for this? It often takes two years or so for the villi to rebound once we adopt a gluten free diet. Commonly on this forum we recommend people begin supplementing with a high potency B-complex, B12, 5000 to 10,000 IU of D3 daily, magnesium glycinate and zinc. Make sure all vitamins and supplements are gluten free.

Is your weight loss a concern or is it welcome?

Thank you for your response.

I am not taking the vitamins you mentioned. Thank you for letting me know this and all your information.

The weight loss is not a concern, as I could loss a few pounds.

Take care,

Barry

Most celiacs will benefit for a good gluten-free multivitamin & mineral supplement. One A Day and Geritol are good examples.

Depending on the level of villi damage you have it could take a few months to heal, and normally you will regain lost weight after that point.

Your doctor probably doesn't have celiac disease 😁. Many of its almost 200 recorded symptoms are caused by nutrient deficiencies, some of which take years to recover from, depending on the level of gut damage you have.

"Should I be losing weight?"

The "should" part is up to you.  If you were overweight and happy to see some pounds taking leave, then take the win.  The weight loss is not from removing gluten per se, but likely from removing the carbs and calories that come along with gluten containing foods like bread, pasta etc.  If you're not happy about the weight loss then, as other have said, make sure you're getting the nutrients you need and consider adding more calories / carbs to your diet.  Gluten free pasta, potatoes, bread, fruit, cheese etc. will all help.  All the best and welcome to the club :)

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.

Good day! New members here and I have a question about medication. My gastroenterologist made me stop some medication during the gluten challenge beforenthe screening test but I have a little surgery tomorrow and I need to know if I can use tylenol for half a day or if it will give me false results using it.   Thanks
