Outer ear pain - cartilage inflammation

For nearly a week now I've been suffering from very unpleasant ear pain - it feels at times it is the cartilage, the very tip of my ear - like someone is pulling at it or it's been nicked by a pair of scissors at the barbers type pain, other times it feels like there's a bee sting at the side of my head.  It hurts if I put pressure on the ear, or the side of my head, but also when I move.  Cool air tends to help, but warm water in the shower causes it to hurt.

I've been to the doctors and he's given me antibiotics to see if it helps, saying the inside of my ear is quite red, but the strange thing is the inner ear does not hurt at all.

I've had this type of burning pain before since being diagnosed as a coeliac in different sites including pain that wrapped around my left ribs, which lasted a yea,r and my sacroiliac joints, which comes and goes.

I have googled for ideas for pain relief as much as anything else and I've discovered that people with autoimmune conditions can get something called chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis on the ear.  The pain matches that exactly  except I've nothing to show for the pain; it also matches shingles before a rash appears but again no lesions.

Anyone had anything similar?

The picture and the description in the article linked above indicates there is an wound or an ulcer in connection with this in addition to the erythema. Do you have that also or just the redness?

Hi Trents.  Thanks for coming back to me.  Very puzzling - nothing to show for it at all.  I can only think that it is either something else altogether, or the ulcer takes a while to show.  Apparently sleeping on the affected side is how it can arise, but I seldom sleep on that side.

I have read that cartilage injuries can take a long while to heal because of the poor blood supply.  Perhaps I've injured it.

Is it warm to the touch?

No - so odd.  But it feels as if it should be.  It also feels as if I've been stung by a bee.  No sting.

Yeah, that one is always hard, especially since life seems to revolve around food. That happened to me 2 weeks ago with hibachi and with Hungarian hot dogs. I used to be more picky, but now I would love to try all the things if I could. On the bright side, my husband is absolutely wonderful with it, and his mom often brings a few certified gluten-free things to family get-togethers just for me (and tries to make sure main dishes are safe too). Having the people closest to you be supportive can make a huge difference.

I hear you. My extended family is very good about factoring in my celiac disease safety needs when making family celebration meal plans but sometimes it breaks down in the spur of the moment decisions to "Oh, let's go out and get some teriyaki" or the like. Especially when my brother in law comes into town 'cause he's pretty particular about what he likes to eat. So, sometimes I just say, "You guys go ahead without me. I'll find some leftovers." But, still, I admit to feeling a little left out at such times and a little like a 5th wheel.

Same, and I appreciate your comments. I just needed to get it off my chest. Sometimes, even when its a genuine mistake, it can feel all too hurtful and I didn't want to go back to work tomorrow still in my feelings.

Yes, probably slipped his mind. Grace is in order here is my thought.

I should have added that, while I dont have access during the meetings, I do as soon as I leave them (same for him) so I would have seen before I even left work. He has my number since we've needed to coordinate by cell a few times for work and other stuff. I usually have a protein bar or two in my desk for emergencies so I could have grabbed one of those and gone to meet them at the right restaurant.  Someone else decided on the change of restaurant and it must have slipped his mind that I wasn't coming back to my desk.
