L-Glutamine

Hey everyone! I started taking AOR L-Glutamine powder recommended by my naturopath and by day 3 my stomach was just hurting constantly. I took it for 1 more day just to see and the same thing. I finally stopped. I don't know what to do now. My stomach just bothers me every time I eat something. I doubt this is a normal thing with L-Glutamine. I'm not getting glutened, I know that for sure. 

Is there something else I can take that won't aggravate me? or should I just let it be and just have my gut heal on its own? - Is this a bad thing? 

On top of that I believe I have histamine intolerance, because I just get rashes or my skin gets inflamed. I've never been so stressed out in my life.

How long have you been gluten-free?

Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months.

Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.

Hi, @alexsb01,

How are you doing?  Are you feeling better?

You want to take Tryptophan.  Not Glutamine.  

Glutamine gets turned into Glutamate, a neurotransmitter that excites not just in the brain, but also in the intestines.  

Tryptophan gets turned into Serotonin, the neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood (happy, agreeable), and regulates the release of histamine from mast cells.  Tryptophan also makes Melatonin which regulates the sleep cycle.  Tryptophan has also been shown to calm immune responses in the intestines and promotes healing.  

I followed a recommendation to take Glutamine early in my journey and had a reaction similar to yours.  

Check with your doctor before starting any supplements if you're taking prescription medications.

Tryptophan and a B 100 Complex would be a good place to start.  Benfotiamine, a form of Thiamine Vitamin B 1, works with Tryptophan and also promotes intestinal healing, and magnesium glycinate are also very helpful.  

I understand how frustrating this journey can be.  We'll help get you through this bumpy part.  Hang in there!

      Thank you that’s really helpful, hopeful won’t have to have a biopsy.

      That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

      Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

      Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

      Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.
