Hi everybody - Hope this finds you well. This is sort of a random email just to see what you guys think.

I was diagnosed this Sept. with Celiac - my great aunt on my father's side also has Celiac. I've finally convinced my father to get tested - my doc suggested he should - and so he had the TTG yesterday and will get results back on Monday. He's always had "gut" issues - he just says that on occasion something doesn't sit well with him and he gets the D probably a few times a month.

How likely is it that my own father might turn up positive for Celiac?

Throwin' it out there...AmandaD :D

P.S. By the way, I'm 30 and my dad is 56.

Amanda,

I'm 56 and I had D issues for about the past 10 years. Last year after a bad bout of the flu I started losing weight and was positively Dx'd with Celiac Disease. My D symptoms were about once or twice a month and sometimes lasted as long as 1 or two weeks. I think I was accidentally going on and off gluten during those times and that is why this symptom would come and go. I did not know about gluten until I was diagnosed. Since I have been on diet I have had no D issues. Going on one year now.

Cool, Tom, glad you're better - I had D this summer and at first thought it was a bug and then just wouldn't get right. I would have it like every week or so and I noticed in about 5 weeks I had lost 7 pounds - I remember thinking - this is either cool or this is not good! After I started the diet after my endoscopy my D slowly subsided and I'm feeling like I've finally got it under control, too!

My dad has always called his the "Mortimore stomach" because he says lots of people on his side of the family have issues with food. I think that's pretty funny because I'm betting it's actually Celiac, but who knows!

Amanda - that is funny about your Dad saying he has the so-and-so stomach. That is what Dr. Rudert said lots of families do. They have GI issues and don't of course know it's actually due to undx'd Celiac. Keep us posted about your Dad. I'd bet he indeed has Celiac.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
