Bad Experience At Lunch...

I went to lunch with my husband and his mother today, to a restaurant where I have never had any problems. Must have been the lunch rush or something, but they brought my food out to me with BREAD on the plate (after my server had specifically written down NO BREAD on the ticket). I told them that it was wrong and I would need a new plate, the manager came over and asked what I needed etc.

So they brought it out, and it was the SAME PLATE of food with the bread taken off. I asked the manager "is this the same food?" and he said yes. He offered to make me a new plate, but I told him no thanks. I just didn't feel comfortable eating there after it had come back wrong twice.

So why do I feel so guilty about it?? He was a very nice man, our server was very nice, they both were very kind and apologetic and even gave my mother in law and husband free lunches...but I feel BAD for not allowing them to get me another meal.

you know, I don't blame you for not eating. It is so frustratating to ask for something simple, but specific. Have the manager come to your table, and still do it wrong. I mean, really, you could have just taken the bread off the plate yourself if that was all they were going to do. Maybe next time you can tell them all about CC and what it does to you. I'm sure that would be enjoyable to them.

You have to do what is right for you. If you didn't feel comfortable with the food, then don't eat. Have a snack when you get home. But don't beat yourself up over a decsion that was best for you! And with that, I know it's easier said then done! I'm a people pleaser myself! Did your family give you a hard time about it? Is that where some of this is coming from? I ask, because my DH would be uncomfortable eating if I wasn't, and I would feel guilty that he didn't enjoy his meal.....Like I said I'm a people pleaser too!

Oh no, my husband said that he totally understood why I didn't want to eat after that and my MIL didn't say anything about it. I didn't make a scene or anything, I just quietly said "No thanks, I don't feel comfortable with this". I just feel bad because the manager was so nice! If he was jerky about it I wouldn't feel bad at all.

Well I'm glad your DH was really good about it! Even if they were really nice, surely they didn't really think that if they just removed the bread, it would solve the problem. Of course you wanted new food, that was the whole point! I still stick to, you shouldn't feel bad at all, other then that you didn't get to eat with the family! But that's not your fault.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
